Los Angeles Man Shares His ‘Excessive’ Trick to Prevent Car Break-Ins, And It Includes a Weird-Looking Sock: ’A Small Price to Pay’

Losing items to theft is an experience many try to avoid as much as possible, even more so when it results in an expensive repair bill. One Los Angeles man developed his own “excessive” and rather interesting strategy to prevent car break-ins, which could save him hundreds of dollars in repairs, and claimed it “works.”
Sebastian (@sebby.tv) shared his know-how to stop car break-ins in a video on TikTok, which has since gained more than 2.9 million views. According to Sebastian, he was “willing to do anything” after his car had been broken into more than 20 times, and he is now sharing his tricks for anyone who might be interested to try it.
Sebastian’s first step to protecting his car in Los Angeles might make you scratch your head a bit, but it’s to leave a note on the driver’s side window that says, “Please Don’t Break Window I left $2 inside.” He also leaves his car doors unlocked with $2 for the taking.
His rock sock might make thieves second-guess committing car break-ins
“It’s a small price to pay since replacing a window is like $500,” Sebastian said. His next step is to place a camera inside his car. However, he doesn’t actually connect the camera to anything to make it work and record footage. Rather, he only makes the camera look like it’s working by placing the plug inside the glove compartment.
Sebastian’s third trick might also make some people turn their heads. According to the TikToker, he keeps a “sock full of rocks” and hangs it up on the rearview mirror. “I believe this actually stops a lot of people from breaking in because it just looks weird,” Sebastian said.
Another trick of Sebastian’s is to place a good amount of salt under the tires, which he claimed was more of a superstition to keep away any negative energy. This is actually a rather common superstition among cultures, as salt is viewed as more than a food seasoning, but as a purifying agent that wards off misfortune and evil as well.
For thieves who are a little more “greedy,” Sebastian said he likes to leave a single dish sponge in the trunk, should the thief decide to open it. However, he makes sure he doesn’t leave any valuables in the car. He doesn’t explain why he chose to leave a sponge, although it could be because it’s on the cheaper side.
Prevention is not guaranteed
While Sebastian’s method is a little unconventional and perhaps questionable, he claimed his car hasn’t been broken into since doing these tricks. “The reason I do all this is because in LA, your car is literally never safe,” Sebastian said. “And believe it or not, ever since I started doing this, my car has not been broken into. I know it looks, like, funny. It looks goofy, but it works.”
Viewers were left amused by Sebastian’s tricks. Some agreed with the TikToker’s observation that the sock might be doing the heavy lifting in stopping someone from breaking into his car. “I’m crying the sock is definitely off putting,” the commenter wrote.
Others were a bit more straightforward. “Just pay some etsy witch for protection,” a commenter said. Another wrote, “Just lock it.” Some were even a bit confused about why such measures needed to be taken, saying, “I’m too european for this.” Nevertheless, Sebastian’s methods can’t be verified for how effective they are. So if you do try some of his tricks, like leaving the doors unlocked, there’s a chance your items, or your car, can get stolen.
