John Powell of How to Train Your Dragon, the Bourne Trilogy, and Shrek to Compose Han Solo Score

Recommended Videos

The Star Wars Show announced today that Ron Howard’s Han Solo movie will be scored by John Powell. While Star Wars fans might’ve anticipated the possibility of John Williams or Michael Giacchino taking on the project, Powell is an excellent choice. Even if you don’t recognize his name, you’ve definitely heard Powell’s work before in lots of popular franchises.

Powell was responsible for the scores of the original Bourne Trilogy, How to Train Your Dragon, The Italian Job remake, and modern classic Shrek (yes, the composed music is not the most notable part of Shrek’s soundtrack but listen to “True Love’s First Kiss” and tell me that’s not a banger).

Slash Film has compiled a number of his scores, which you can give a listen to if you’d like. How to Train Your Dragon is probably my favorite though, with its soaring strings and sweeps perfectly suited to a fantasy epic. Doesn’t that music just make you feel like you can do anything? We’re sure to get lots of great flying and action sequences, and I’m excited to hear Powell’s score accompany them. The Han Solo movie has been described as a heist or western-type film and the score may evoke some elements of that genre as well. It’s too early to say, but I’m definitely excited to hear Powell take on Star Wars.

What do you think about Powell tackling the Han Solo score?
