Director Ava DuVernay revealed the official U.S. teaser trailer for A Wrinkle In Time, her adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s acclaimed novel, at the D23 Expo before sharing it on Twitter. During her presentation at D23, she described the movie as “a family story wrapped in an epic adventure, where you see worlds you’ve never seen before.”
She also explained what drew her to A Wrinkle in Time. “I saw myself in it,” she said. “I saw so many different kinds of people and personalities in it.”
Chris Pine, also on the panel, had a slightly different reason for joining the project: “Ava. Period.” (Pine is playing Dr. Alex Murry.)
From the adorable on-set photos to the beautiful stills in Entertainment Weekly, DuVernay already had me ridiculously excited for this film – and the sweeping, strange, colorful trailer met all my expectations. I can’t wait to see all these worlds through DuVernay’s eye.
While this looks like it’ll be pretty excellent, it’s important to remember that A Wrinkle in Time will be a landmark film no matter its final result. Whatever its box office, whatever its reception, it’s already made history behind-the-scenes. Duvernay is officially the first black woman to direct a $100 million film. This is an important step toward equitable hiring in Hollywood, and it’ll be an important part of the film’s legacy.
Directed by Duvernay from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee, A Wrinkle in Time stars Storm Reid as Meg Murry, Levi Miller as Calvin, Deric McCabe as Charles Wallace, Chris Pine as Dr. Alex Murry, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Dr. Kate Murry, Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which, and Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit. It opens in U.S. theaters on March 9, 2018.
