If We Don’t See the 27 Star Wars Takes of Carrie Fisher Slapping Oscar Isaac, What Are We Even Doing?

Recommended Videos

Oscar Isaac recently went on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert for an interview that has everything you could ever want, including incredible anecdotes about Carrie Fisher, childhood movie clips, dad jokes, and geeking out about Shakespeare interpretations as the actor prepares for his debut as Hamlet in New York this summer.

Isaac, whose first movie experience was Return of the Jedi, and Colbert, who we know is geeky as hell, talk about their love of the series and Poe Dameron. Not giving too much away, Isaac says he has a “large amount” of scenes with Fisher. “The first day of shooting was a scene with Carrie,” he says, “oftentimes the first day the filmmakers, everyone’s trying to get the tone and figure it out and I remember it’s a scene where I go up to her and she’s very upset with me and slaps me. Rian [Johnson] kept doing it over and over…it ended up being 27 takes of Carrie just leaning in and every time she would hit a different spot in my face.”

I only hope that when the special features and DVD for The Last Jedi comes out that we’ll be able to see these outtakes of Carrie Fisher slapping the hell out of Oscar Isaac 27 times. The actor goes on to call her “by far, the quickest witted, funniest, most down-to-earth, real human beings I ever had the opportunity to work with. She does amazing work in this. Yeah, it was definitely a heartbreaker.”

The two also revisit some of Isaac’s early work in genre film, specifically a home video he made as a child about a “monster that ends up much like Darth Vader, being killed by love,” and talk about how Isaac is approaching Hamlet with the reading of the folio.

Are you looking forward to seeing Poe Dameron and General Leia Organa in The Last Jedi?
