Things We Saw Today: Elmo Gets Fired Because of Trump’s Budget Cuts

Recommended Videos

What’s Trending produced a parody video, in which Elmo is informed that he’s being fired, to highlight Donald Trump’s unprecedented, draconian cuts to arts and education funding.

“Elmo, it gives me no great joy to inform you that, due to recent cuts in government funding to PBS, you are no longer employed by Sesame Street Workshop.”
“Huh? Just like that? Elmo’s been working at Sesame Street for 32 years!”
“But Elmo hasn’t been unemployed since the ’80s!”

(Admittedly, Sesame Street now airs on HBO first, so the show isn’t in as much danger as many other PBS shows, which don’t have a lucrative cable channel to help produce their episodes. But, c’mon, puppets make for better videos.)

Warning: the ending gets very, very real.

  • Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone will both return for more Marvel movies. James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, said in an interview, “This is definitely not a one-off [for them]. They’re both characters that we’ve taken a lot of time to develop, and they’re a big part of the MCU now.” Hmmm… (Via ScreenCrush)
  • Should San Diego name their soccer team Footy McFooty Face or Bad Hombres? I know this sports news is a little off-brand, but the people of San Diego are caught between preserving the spirit of Boaty McBoatface and preserving the spirit of trolling Trump–both spirits that TMS readers seem to support. Like many a foolish corporation, SoccerCity SD thought it would be an awesome idea to ask the public to vote on the name for San Diego’s new Major League Soccer team on Facebook. The current frontrunners are, unsurprisingly, a bit ridiculous. Fans of Boaty McBoatface are rooting for Footy McFooty Face, the leader as of this writing, but fans who want to deliver a big “screw you” to Trump are advocating for Bad Hombres. (Via joe.co.uk)
  • Comics Alliance replaced the dialogue in old Archie comics panels with some lines from Riverdale, creating a hilarious contrast between the modern, raunchier talk and the comics’ old-fashioned style.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has some groovy new international posters.
  • All right, it’s now the second weekend, so you’re all going to sit through this pun: the live-action Beauty and the Beast is officially a…beast at the box office! Up against the opening of another nostalgia reboot, Power Rangers, Beauty and the Beast held onto its #1 spot, taking its worldwide totals to $700 million. (Via Hollywood Reporter)
