Watch the Trailer for Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events at Your Own Risk

Netflix’s adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events finally has a full-length trailer, and fans of the books will no doubt have a great time trying to pick out all the symbols and objects. We have Gothic buildings, Violet Baudelaire inventing, secret codes, and, of course, eye symbols galore. Already, the series has a very distinctive look from the coloring to the ambiguous time period. For example, Neil Patrick Harris’ Olaf makes a reference to the internet, but there are also intense 1920s vibes from Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies” and the backdrop–though this is very much evocative of the anachronisms from the book series.

Other exciting things I noticed was that the cast is much more diverse, and several key characters are played by actors of color. It’s a small detail, but a pleasant surprise considering how I’m used to white-as-default in adaptations. Aasif Mandvi is totally going to crush it as Uncle Monty, as will Alfre Woodard as Aunt Josephine and K. Todd Freeman as Mr. Poe.

I think author Daniel Handler’s role a executive producer shines through, or at the very least a huge amount of appreciation for the books by the showrunners. The trailer showcases a lot of humor in the show that reflects the black humor of Handler’s writing. I’m especially intrigued by Patrick Warburton’s Lemony Snicket, and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of role he’ll play.

What do you think about the trailer?
