It’s the little things that really give a movie its size and shape, and here, Disney demonstrates their masterful skills at knowing just how much nostalgia to add to a movie remake.
We’ve known for a while that Disney would be taking nods from their own original animated movie, and much to their credit, that move won them a lot of support from fans still in the throes of wistful nostalgia (e.g., me). Beauty and the Beast stands as one of Disney’s most classic, iconic films, so this new movie’s got some big, beast-sized shoes to fill. Honestly, though, if they’re approaching this with a bit of a nostalgic eye, they’ve already got the money in the bank. While much can (and should) be said for nostalgia getting in the way of creativity, here, the decision may very well be worth forgiving.
That being said, Disney’s also taken some of their own departures with this movie, both changing up Belle’s backstory (she’s the inventor now!) and a few other details that add up to a much more well-rounded movie.
It’s nice, though, to know that Disney didn’t forget about the things that allowed the original movie to make such an indelible mark on the Hollywood movie landscape.
