Peter Capaldi, a.k.a. the Doctor himself, took to the stage at Madison Square Garden earlier today as part of the New York Comic Con debut of the Doctor Who spin-off, Class, which is set to premiere in Spring 2017 along with the 10th Season of Doctor Who. Check out one of the two trailers they showed above!
As reported by Deadline Hollywood, Capaldi joined Executive Producers Steven Moffat, Brian Minchin, and writer Patrick Ness to debut not only the above trailer, but a separate, exclusive trailer “introducing the characters of the show and the school itself. The expanded trailer ended with a funny clip of the main characters discussing how much they enjoy the CW’s Vampire Diaries, created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec.”
Meanwhile, at the Doctor Who panel, Capaldi, Moffat, and Minchin were joined by Pearl Mackie (Bill) and Matt Lucas (Nardole) to talk about the upcoming season, as well as the Christmas special we’ll be able to watch in a couple of months. Check out the trailer for the Christmas special, titled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio”:
As you may remember, we got the news that a “superhero” with an American accent would be joining the Doctor in the special, and that he’d be played by Orphan Black and Shameless‘ Justin Chatwin. You may have noticed him in the footage above, looking like a cross between Batman and Superman with a big “G” on his chest (Super Grover?). And here’s a still photo of him so that we can really take in his majesty:

So, he’s a “new” hero, not a pre-existing one, which makes sense for many reasons (including legal ones). However, he’s clearly inspired by several American superheroes. As for who or what the character is exactly, we still don’t know.
The Christmas special looks like it’ll be a lot of fun! And with Season 10 of Doctor Who (which also happens to be Steven Moffat’s last as showrunner) as well as new show Class coming out along with it, Spring 2017 is shaping up to be an exciting time for Whovians everywhere!
