We’re sitting on the edges of our seats waiting for the return of Black Mirror, this time as a Netflix Original Series. TMS’ Charline Jao already gave us the run-down of what we can expect for Season 3, but now we have a trailer so that we can get a glimpse of how these weird, surreal stories of our not-too-distant future play out. Check it out above!
This trailer for Season 3 of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror really allows us to see the difference in tone and style for each of the six episodes. Bryce Dallas Howard’s episode, “Nosedive,” is all candy-colored and Stepford Wives-esque, while what appears to be the episode “Men Against Fire” looks like it came straight out of a video game.
It’s thrilling that, in the move to Netflix, the streaming service was able to fund double the episodes, giving us six instead of Black Mirror‘s usual three with Channel 4 in the UK, and there’s definitely a more expansive, and a more American, feel to these episodes. This isn’t a bad thing! In fact, so many American accents intermingled with the English ones gives the stories more of a global scope, which makes their implications about the digital age in which we live much more frightening.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom. There’s humor, as evidenced by lines like a woman telling a guy, “Singularity is when computers learn to outsmart man. Like women did years ago.” Tee hee.
There’s also hope, as a character from one of the episodes says, “We’re genuinely empathetic as a species. We don’t actually, really want to kill each other.” In these turbulent times when the world seems to have gone topsy-turvy, we need to hear messages like that, and it’s cool to see that even a show as cynical and dark as Black Mirror often is makes space for that kind of hope and faith in humanity.
Of course, I don’t know the context. For all I know the person who utters those words gets shot immediately after.
In any case, not only do we know that we have six episodes coming (one of them being the show’s first 90-minute regular episode), but we know we have a whole other season. As reported by io9, Black Mirror producer Annabel Jones confirmed that they will be moving forward with a Season 4.
