More People Saw Suicide Squad Than Captain America: The Winter Soldier Internationally

Say what you want about the film, but Suicide Squad is making bank at the box office. The divisive film has earned $718.8 million worldwide, which is slightly higher than Captain America: The Winter Solider’s $714.4 tally as Comic Book Resources pointed out. The difference is small but it gives Suicide Squad fans who feel the movie was painted in an unfair light, pause to celebrate. The film has yet to surpass this year’s Captain America: Civil War (which has raked in a whopping $1.1 billion so far) but there’s still time to catch up.

Much has been made about lackluster reviews, with led to fans petitioning for Rotten Tomatoes to be shut down. Director David Ayer responded to the negativity by tweeting, “I love the movie and believe in it. Made it for the fans. Best experience of my life.”

Jared Leto also caused a stir mostly due to his behind-the-scenes antics in which he sent co-stars odd items including bullets, used condoms, anal beads and a live rat. The extreme method acting didn’t work out as he had hoped, since most of his scenes were cut from the film.  According to Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn, those scenes weren’t essential to the story. “They probably realized that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission that we were on, and explaining the Enchantress’ position and all that kind of stuff … so there’s a lot, but it just didn’t make sense to confuse the present storyline to incorporate all that,” she said.

While we’re not sure if Suicide Squad was the last we’ll see of Leto’s Joker, it looks like Robbie might be getting her own solo flick. As for Captain America, he’s got his own problems to deal with.
