Director Doug Liman Swaps Gambit for Justice League Dark, a Film About DC’s Edgier Superheroes

After being removed from Marvel’s release schedule, the much-delayed Gambit movie has suffered another setback. Director Doug Liman has parted ways with the Channing Tatum-led project to work with the company’s direct competition, DC Entertainment, on that long-awaited Justice League Dark film, after Guillermo del Toro dropped out. If Liman’s name rings a bell, that’s because he directed a number of high-profile projects, like The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Edge of Tomorrow.

The film, based on DC’s more supernatural heroes like Constantine and Madame Zanadu, had been in development with del Toro for several years, but it got continually shelved while he worked on different projects. Now, with Liman making the commitment, it looks like things will finally get underway.

The comic series, debuting in 2011, came about in the fallout from Flashpoint, DC’s mega crossover alternate existence event, which also introduced a new character by the name of Mindwarp. When Enchantress defeats the Justice League, a new, more supernaturally-inclined team is called upon to stop her. Along with Constantine, Mindwarp and Madame Zandu, that team included Deadman, Pandora, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Doctor Mist, Black Orchid, Andrew Mist from I, Vampire and more.

Per SlashFilm, the movie is reportedly titled Dark Universe, but additional details are scarce. Given the internet’s penchant to spoil things before a project is even completed, that’s probably a good thing. I know it’s super hip these days to cast doubt on a DC property, but I’m actually intrigued by this one.
