Speaking of Broadway coming to the screen: the inevitable Wicked film adaptation finally has a green light and a release date: December 20th, 2019. You undoubtedly remember the incredibly popular musical that made Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith household names throughout the country—that is, except for John Travolta, I guess.
Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Billy Elliot, The Hours) will be directing the film, with Marc Platt (Drive, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Bridge of Spies) producing. Also on board is Winnie Holzman (‘Til There Was You), who will be collaborating with composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz on the script and music book.
There’s a lot to love about Wicked, and we’ve got some pretty high hopes for the film adaptation. There’s no word yet on who might be starring in the film, though it would be really fun to see Menzel and Chenowith reprise their roles. If not that, then you can almost bet that they’ll be making at least a cameo in the film. The pair performed together for a YouTube video back in May for Wicked‘s “Out of Oz” studio sessions. That was the first time they had performed together since 2004.
