The Battlestar Galactica movie has technically been in the works for some time now–two years ago, it was announced that Universal had hired a writer to make it happen (but like New Caprica, once that news dropped we were all left wondering and waiting if the film would be in limbo forever). Then, back in February, it looked like the film had made its way back into development–or maybe it had just downloaded into a new body.
Well, much like the Cylons, Universal seems to have a plan after all–even if it’s taken them some time to properly execute it. On Thursday Deadline officially confirmed that the studio had decided to move forward with the project, and a new writer–Lisa Joy (writer and executive producer on Westworld) will be putting together a script. Francis Lawrence, who recently directed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, will be teaming up again with J. Law in Red Sparrow before he reportedly sits in the directing chair for the BSG movie.
Right now, it’s not entirely confirmed if the film will be staying truer to the original 1978 television series or if it’ll take a book out of the 2003 Ronald D. Moore reimagining–or if it’ll be an completely new adaptation of the BSG universe we’ve all come to know and frakking love over the years. As the Cylons are so often fond of saying: “All of this has happened before.” Still, even if it’s a brand-new movie, it would be fun to find ways to incorporate original cast members–perhaps just in small cameos.
