Her Universe and Hot Topic collaborated on a new fashion collection inspired by the heroes and villains of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The line has just launched today and can be found at hottopic.com or in select Hot Topic stores. The video above shows what some of the outfits look like in motion; the gallery below includes more detailed still photos of the outfits.
The full collection, featuring nine pieces, came about as the result of a design competition held last year at San Diego Comic-Con. The two finalists, Leetal Platt and Kelly Cercone, showed their own original designs on the runway at the convention, and the judges selected them for the opportunity to put together a fashion line with Her Universe founder, Ashley Eckstein.
We’ve interviewed Ashley Eckstein before about the Her Universe clothing line, all of which is designed with geeky ladies’ fashion sense in mind. We also recently reviewed their recent Captain America: Civil War fashion line, which was done as a partnership with Kohl’s.
Hot Topic seems like a great partnership for these striking designs. The Kylo Ren and Storm Trooper dresses definitely look like they’d fit right in on the dress racks there. That Captain Phasma jacket and leggings set looks appropriately intimidating. None of these outfits work as cosplay per se because they aren’t canonically accurate; instead, they’re just cool twists on the costume’s themes. Finn’s jacket, for example, is made out of a different material and adds a symbol to the back that doesn’t appear on the original jacket, but it’s still a clear homage to the original jacket, what with the sleeve detailing and red stripes on the front.
