Sam Rockwell Said We Were Seriously This Close to a Galaxy Quest Sequel

Recommended Videos

Sam Rockwell had some disappointing news to break regarding that oft-rumored Galaxy Quest sequel. Apparently right up until Alan Rickman passed away, we were this close to actually getting one. In a podcast interview with the Nerdist, he said, “We were ready to sign up, and Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn’t available – he has a show – and everybody’s schedule was all weird. It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That’s a hard void to fill.”

Frankly, Rockwell’s got a great point. Allen’s scheduling troubles aside, the loss of Rickman would have created an emotional vacuum, one that I’m not sure any amount of good writing would have been able to seal up. While I’d be curious to see what a Galaxy Quest sequel might be without Rickman, I know that it just won’t be the same. This leaves us with a question, though: just what might a Galaxy Quest sequel look like if it ever does happen?

As Movies.com’s Peter Hall points out, it’s likely better off as a completely clean, fresh reboot with a whole new cast. It’d be interesting if (in true near-parody style) they took a page from Star Trek‘s playbook and rebooted the entire thing with a younger cast… only to have them cross-over with the remnants of the original cast in some kind of parallel universe thing. I mean, I’d totally watch that movie. I don’t know about y’all…
