James Wan Plans To “Have Fun” With Aquaman

Now if only we knew what Wan's definition of fun was.

While James Wan is very well-known for directing several famous horror films, including Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring, he said that his adaptation of DC superhero Aquaman will not necessarily have the same gritty or dark tone as its predecessor, Batman V Superman.

In an interview with IGN at WonderCon, Wan responded to concerns that the DCEU was potentially becoming too dark or heavy in tone, saying that even his “darker horror films” still possess some element of fun in them. Similarly, he said that Aquaman likely won’t go down the same path that Batman V Superman did:

I think Aquaman is a character that is, you know, a lot of people have made fun of over the years, and I just think it’s fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character, but at the same time, let’s not forget to have fun with it.

Overall, I feel like having a different director at the helm–and a director who sounds like they really know how to treat the source material–is going to be a good thing for this movie. Jason Momoa is certainly taking his role in the matter very seriously, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be some lighter moments.

Wan said that even his latest film, Lights Out, which he was attending WonderCon to present, is more of a fun horror film than anything too dark and depressing. Aquaman won’t be in theaters until July 27, 2018, but the character will be making an appearance in the Justice League movie which will premiere November 17, 2017.
