Oh, what a day! According to Variety, Imperator Theron is “in talks” to ride or die in Furious 8 as a villain.
Furious 8, which, in the absence of more Furiosa-specific Mad Max movies, I am now dubbing the spiritual successor to Fury Road, will be directed by Straight Outta Compton‘s F. Gary Gray and filmed in New York.
The Furious franchise has a surprisingly great track record of awesome lady roles (I say surprising because many of the films have also gone out of their way to use tangential female characters as set dressing for the male gaze; but the movies have also featured more kick-ass, competent and diverse women than any other major action franchise in recent memory), so I have no doubt Furious 8 would use Theron to her full potential. I kinda wish she wasn’t going to be pitted against Dom and the gang, but I have a hunch we could also see her defecting over to the side of TRUTH and FRIENDSHIP at some point down the line.
