Stephanie Meyer’s Genderswapped Version of Twilight: Life and Death

On Twilight’s 10th anniversary (wow, has it been that long), Stephanie Meyer revealed that her fans can take a bite out of something brand new: a re-imagining of the original Twilight book. The biggest thing about this re-imagining is that she’s switched the genders of her protagonists, Bella and Edward. They’re both now Beau and Edyth, respectively.

According to the above interview, Meyer said she did it as a response to fans who said that they worried Bella was too much of a damsel in distress.

A question that had come up at a lot of signings and other things was about Bella being a damsel in distress. And it’s always bothered me a little bit, because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be in a bit of distress…

And so I thought if I switched it around a little bit to see how a boy does, and you know, it’s about the same.

Huh. Fandoms play around with genderswapping all the time, and Twilight is no exception to that. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out and what the reviews might look like. Moreover, it’s also interesting to see an author take that kind of fan feedback and directly incorporate it into a brand new story to be shared and compared with their older work. Not saying it’s never happened before, but it’s always nice to see.

Any hardcore Twilight fans in the house? How do you feel about this announcement?
