Drew Goddard, executive producer/showrunner for Daredevil‘s first season and writer on the its first two episodes, has some encouraging words for how the show’s second season is shaping up in his absence.
While doing press for The Martian, which Goddard adapted into a screenplay from the book by Andy Weir, he gave some insight into how Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil TV show came to be in the first place. Speaking to IGN, Goddard said,
I went into Marvel and talked to them about making it as a movie a couple of years ago, long after the [Ben] Affleck movie. But what we all sort of realized is that, this movie doesn’t want to cost $200 million. The thing about Matt Murdock is, he’s not saving the world. He’s just keeping his corner clean. So it would feel wrong to have spaceships crashing in the middle of the city. But because of that, Marvel on the movie side is not in the business of making $25 million movies. They’re going big, as they should.
Personally, I’m starting to prefer superhero TV to movies for exactly that reason: The stories get a chance to breathe and focus more on character than on big action and effects set pieces. Superhero movies, especially in Marvel’s case right now, feel like the big, loud, over-action-packed crossover events in comics rather than following your favorite series/character. I can’t imagine Marvel doing it, but I’d love to see all the solo outings take place over 12 hours on the small screen every year instead of two hours on the big screen with several years in between.
And of course, there are other benefits that go with TV as opposed to movies—especially when it comes to Netflix—like not having to worry about MPAA ratings:
It felt that we’d have more freedom to make it on the small screen and make it more adult. Look, if we took the Netflix [show] and put it in theaters, it’s rated R. And they’re not doing R-rated movies. And we also got to really explore the character. I feel like Netflix was the best possible home for that, otherwise you’d end up with a watered down version.
He mentioned that the benefit of that freedom also extends to what they were able to do with Punisher in season 2, though Goddard is no longer involved—and that season 2 will be even better than season 1. He said,
Yeah, I’m not running the show any more, Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are, and they’re doing a phenomenal job. I get to go and play. All I can tell you is that if you liked Season 1, then Season 2 is going to blow your mind. They’re going big.
