Nintendo’s Mario Mastermind Says They’re Finally Considering Movies Again

Brb. Digging out several unfinished Nintendo fic scripts.

Nintendo’s living, breathing Super Mario maker (not to be confused with the game of the same name that allows you to basically play with his imagination), Shigeru Miyamoto, says Nintendo is finally reconsidering their position on getting into the movie business!

There have been rumblings of a Legend of Zelda Netflix series recently and a strange partnership between Universal and Nintendo for theme parks, but when Miyamoto says something, it tends to carry a bit more weight than your standard rumor. Speaking to Fortune, the creator of the entire Super Mario Bros., Zelda, and Star Fox franchises said Nintendo may finally have gotten over its original failure at the box office—if not in those words:

As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that—and we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future.

And who could blame them with the success of animated and genre film lately? They’ve already allowed their characters to be included in movies like Wreck It Ralph and Pixels (though the latter is unlikely to allay any of their quality control fears), but full fledged Nintendo movies aren’t too far off by the sound of things. No doubt they’re looking for ways to cash in on their valuable properties—always their biggest asset—in the wake of the Wii U’s failure, so the timing seems about right.

So what’ll it be? A new Mario movie to erase one of Nintendo’s most mockable moments? Real, cinematic Zelda? It’s OK. You don’t have to hide it. You can admit that what you’re really hoping for is a Captain N shared movie universe. It could be the NCU!
