Last week, we covered the story of the feminist activists in China who came to be known as the “Beijing Five” after being detained for a month with no charges pressed against them after having been arrested shortly before an International Women’s Day in March. We have now learned that three of the five women have been released.
Wei Tingting, Wang Man and Zheng Churan have been released without charges. As the above CNN video explains, because of the way the legal system works in China, prisoners and their family members are informed of their fate one by one, so word doesn’t get to their respective lawyers or to the press. So, we still don’t know what’s going on with the remaining women still being detained, Wu Rongrong and Li Tingting.
Until those last two are freed, keep that #freethefive hashtag flying, people. Then, once they’re all free, that’s when the real work begins, of course.
