Syfy Developing Hackers Reality Show; Christian Slater Hacker Drama Gets Series Order

Few activities are less dynamic than diddling away on one's keyboard, but (presumably in light of the highly-publicized recent attack on Sony), hackers are about to be glamorized in not one but two TV shows. Thanks, maybe-not-North-Korea!

Few activities are less dynamic than diddling away on one’s keyboard, but (presumably in light of the highly-publicized recent attack on Sony), hackers are about to be glamorized in not one but two TV shows. Thanks, maybe-not-North-Korea!

According to Entertainment Weekly, Syfy has announced development on a Catfish-style reality show examining a new cybercrime each episode and featuring interviews with law enforcement officials as well as perpetrators. The producers promise that the show takes “viewers deep inside the shadowy and dangerous world of high-tech hackers for the very first time,” using “sophisticated, never-before-seen digital graphics to create an experiential ‘hacking” scene that exposes what actually happens when a computer network is broken into—including what goes on inside the mind of the hacker.”

If true-crime TV isn’t to your liking, Hackers follows on the heels of USA’s Mr. Robot, a Christian Slater-starring “hacker thriller” given a series order back in December.

Despite recent events, I’m still not personally convinced that Syfy’s project has what it takes to make cybercrime interesting in episodic form, but the presence of Christian Slater does give me hope for Mr.Robot. I mean, we’re basically guaranteed a dramatic rollerblading scene now, right? I’ve developed specific expectations for cyber-dramas featuring stars from a certain era.

What say you, my ragtag gang of curious geniuses? Are you intrigued by either of these shows?
