Here’s Your First Look At Terminator: Genisys, Plus Sarah Connor Is A “Highly Trained Antisocial Recluse”

So dark, so edgy.

And if you think these two actors look confused, wait until you see the faces Matt Smith and Jason Clarke are making. It’s kind of like the two cover pictures were taken while they were explaining to the actors what it is they wanted from the shot, while also shining an incredibly bright light in their eyes.

The accompanying Entertainment Weekly feature, which will hit newsstands in full this Friday, also outlines some of the changes this new rebooted film will make to the Terminator franchise, with particular reference to the role Emilia Clarke plays as the titular Genisys Targaryen—whoops, wait, no, sorry. She’s playing Sarah Connor. My mistake. Anyway, here’s what she’s going to be like:

Twist No. 1? Sarah Connor isn’t the innocent she was when Linda Hamilton first sported feathered hair and acid-washed jeans in the role. Nor is she Hamilton’s steely zero body-fat warrior in 1991’s T2. Rather, the mother of humanity’s messiah was orphaned by a Terminator at age 9. Since then, she’s been raised by (brace yourself) Schwarzenegger’s Terminator—an older T-800 she calls “Pops”—who is programmed to guard rather than to kill. As a result, Sarah is a highly trained antisocial recluse who’s great with a sniper rifle but not so skilled at the nuances of human emotion.

So she’s Batman, is what you’re telling us? Okay. I guess I don’t hate that idea, but I also sort of worry that this film is gonna end up so gritty that the guy from My Cousin Vinny might try to use it as evidence in a murder trial. So we’ll see.
