Simon Cowell’s Doing a Betty Boop Movie. O…kay?

Boop-boop-ee-doop!

I don’t know what to do with this, so I’m just gonna leave it here: According to Variety, Simon Cowell–or, to be more exact, Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment—has been working for months to bring history’s very first Betty Boop feature-length film to the big screen. Syco is working with Fleischer Studios, which owns the rights to the squeaky-voiced flapper, and Animal Logic, the company that did the animation for The Lego Movie.

“Betty is an icon, and one of the biggest stars in the world – I’m thrilled to be working with her,” says Cowell. “Betty, I’ve worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!”

The movie is described as a “music-driven hybrid animated comedy,” and please, please let that “hybrid” not be referring to “live-action/animation hybrid.” After the latest SpongeBob trailer, I’m about worn out on those. The Lego Movie pulled the mix off, because there was a narrative reason for it, and also because it was done in a creative way. Also because Phil Lord and Chris Miller were the directors, and they’re magicians.

The Betty Boop movie, meanwhile, has no director or writer yet. For star: I would like to offer up Amy Adams as my suggestion. If you saw Enchanted, you know she can do it.  Anyone else… it’s a no from me.
