Los Angeles Woman Goes on Hinge Date. She Had No Idea The Date Would Last 9 Hours When She Got In His Car: ‘It Was More a Hostage Situation’

A Los Angeles woman went on a Hinge date that went terribly. Now, a year later, she’s opening up about it.
Olivia Knox (@oliviaknoxofficial) told her audience about a terrible first date she went on with a surfer. In a video that received more than 223,000 views, the musician described the various ways her date completely unnerved her.
The Terrible First Date
Cox said she was going on a Hinge date with a man who was very interested in surfing. He even asked if they could surf together as part of a first date, but she said no.
At first, Cox seemed cautiously optimistic, but the first red flag came as soon as she got in his car. She let him pick her up for what she thought was going to be a quick lunch date. But when she asked what the plan really was, her date didn’t seem to know.
“The second that I close the door, he’s like, ‘So where are we going?’ I thought you made a plan,” she said. ”He’s like, ‘So what are we doing? … What do you wanna do?’ And I was like, “I thought we were getting lunch.’”
Cox said he told her he had the “perfect place.” Then he entered the address for a location that was an hour and a half away.
At first, Knox didn’t say anything about the drive. However, as they got on the road, Knox began to feel nervous.
“ I’m, like, playing with my rings. I’m like, hyperventilating internally,” she said.
The man asked her why she was nervous, and she said she started to get red. She quickly tried to apologize. Then the man did something extremely unexpected.
Upon realizing that she was nervous, Cox’s date started singing.
“I kid you not, he starts, like, singing Disney songs,” she said. She then pretended to hold a microphone in her hand to mimic what he was doing in the car. “He’s doing this when he’s singing to me,” she said.
They arrive at Newport Beach
Cox didn’t clarify whether he continued singing throughout the ride, but time did indeed pass. It took them two full hours to arrive at their destination, as they ran into classic L.A. traffic. They finally arrived at Newport Beach, but Cox still had no idea where they were eating.
That’s when she learned her date had alternative plans.
“ We’re at Newport Beach, and he pulls up and he’s like, ‘This is perfect. This is a perfect spot. I’m gonna pop open my trunk,’” she said. “He starts taking off his clothes … He starts getting naked. I’m like, ‘Sir.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m putting on my wetsuit. We’re gonna go catch some waves. I have an extra one for you. I have an extra one for you.’”
Cox said the man threw an extra wetsuit toward her that was “totally disgusting” and smelt like “complete and utter [expletive].”
She said she stood there for a moment, completely unaware of what she should do. Eventually, she realized she had little choice but to watch him surf.
“He gets ready, and he starts booking it to ‘the waves,’” she said. “These waves were nonexistent. It … was not a day for the waves. There was no waves in sight,” Cox said. In the meantime, she tried to see if she could get an Uber home, only to realize it would cost $200.
Cox recalled that her date kept looking back at her to see if she was paying attention. Eventually, he stopped trying to ride “the waves.”
“He comes out [and] he goes, ‘You weren’t even watching me.’ And this is when I start to crash out,” Cox said.
‘He’s … walking all mopey with his surfboard.’
Cox told her date that she had had enough with his behavior.
“ I was like, ‘This is ridiculous. You said that we were gonna go get dinner. I told you that I didn’t even want to go surfing in the first place. Like, it’s raining, my feet hurt. What’s going on? Like, this is so weird,’” she recalled saying. She said her date apologized and she asked to go home.
From there, her date was “mopey” with his surfboard in hand. They proceeded to walk back toward the car.
But Cox told her audience that she was, at that time, a habitual people pleaser. She made a joke while walking back that restarted a potential conversation. Her date apologized again, and this time, Cox said they could continue their outing. She asked if they could go to a Poke place.
He paid for the food and they sat down at a table. Cox said the man showed her photos of his abdomen and discussed the money he could make in the future.
“ No questions about myself. Nothing really that has to do with me. More about, like, how muscular and how much money he’s going to be making,” she said.
A Sad McFlurry
After that, they headed back to his vehicle. He apologized again and offered to take her to McDonald’s for something sweet, and she accepted. Eventually, they made their way to a McDonald’s drive-thru, where the date quickly worsened. When they arrived at the window, the man ordered one thing—an Oreo McFlurry—without asking Cox what she actually wanted.
Cox brought the issue up. “So I’m, like, looking at him and I’m like, ‘OK, were you not gonna ask me what I wanted?’ And he was like, ‘Oh, sorry, did you want something?’” she recalled.
When an employee at McDonald’s asked whether they wanted two spoons or just one, Cox said they wanted two. This caused another rift.
“ He gets all mad at me because I asked for two spoons. He’s like, ‘You don’t wanna share a spoon?’ … And so he made fun of me for that the entire time,” Cox said.
Cox said that while they ate the Oreo McFlurry, her date continued to make fun of her. She said he repeatedly mentioned how much money he makes. He started singing Disney-like songs again, which Cox said she didn’t know.
Then he suggested that they go to one more spot.
The final, exhausting part
By that point, Cox said she had enough. But she relented and went to one last location with the man.
He took her to another beach. While there, he kissed her hand, and she felt the stubble of his mustache—no words were spoken.
At one point, the man pointed out that some women were taking photos of themselves. As a potential final breaking point, he said, “ Ugh, I hate when women do stuff like that.”
They left the beach, and Cox said she spent the next two and a half hours listening to him talk about the exact same things he had said throughout the date. He sang Disney songs, discussed where he’d be working in the future and how much money he was going to make. He reassured her with too-familiar, sappy affirmations.
Later that night, she gave him a hug goodbye. She officially survived their nine-hour date. She then broke things off via text message.
Commenters share in the horror
Most dating blogs and publications, such as People, recommend that individuals pick out dates that both parties actually like. Exploring shared interests can help potential couples establish common ground. Surfing when one person isn’t interested, then, is a particularly bad choice for a first date.
Commenters, too, reflected that general advice after hearing Cox’s story.
“Aurfing for a first date when someone doesnt surf is so weird,” one viewer said.
Another added, “So you said you didn’t want to surf and he does it anyway. all he wanted was an audience.”
@oliviaknoxofficial I know I said poke wrong don’t worry about it- and yes I still go on hinge dates and yes they are all bad #hingedatestory #hinge #datestorytime #storytime ♬ original sound – Olivia Knox (:
Viewers also gave safety recommendations in the comments section, as Cox’s date raised some particular red flags. Commenters pointed out that him driving her roughly two hours away from her home, for instance, was concerning.
“For people new to dating.. 1. you never get in someone’s car on the 1st date unless you wanna be in a documentary. 2. it’s ok to ask what the plan is for the date in advance so you can let other people/family/friends whatever know where you are and that you are safe,” a viewer said.
Harvard Magazine says that individuals should “ALWAYS meet in a public place for your first date. Meet at a restaurant, a museum or another populated, public place.” Additionally, most blogs discussing date safety say that friends or family should be aware of the details of a first date.
