The world of speedrunning waits for no one. Super Mario 64 speedrunner Siglemic was already the world record holder for the fastest time in getting all of the game’s 120 stars, but he set a new record of 1 hour, 43 minutes, and 54 seconds yesterday. Take some time to marvel at his skills in the game that defined 3D platforming.

Actually, Siglemic specifically prefers the Japanese, Nintendo 64 version of the game to the American version or the Virtual Console. It’s not because he’s a purist, but rather that he likes the Nintendo 64’s controls better, because its joystick doesn’t have a huge dead zone like the Virtual Console rerelease.

He also says the Japanese version can be completed 2.7 seconds faster, and when his new record is only 7 seconds faster than his previous one, those seconds count.

It only took just under two hours for him to beat the game, but Siglemic estimates that it’s taken 5,000 hours of practice to get to that point, so don’t feel too bad if you can’t even get into the castle’s basement in an hour and forty minutes.
