Game of Thrones is currently gearing up for its fourth season, and according to EW, a couple of awesome musicians are getting the chance to interact with the world of Westeros firsthand –namely, indie band Sigur Rós. Maybe David Benioff and Dan Weiss figured they owed Iceland after filming there for so long?
We make jokes, but showrunners Benioff and Weiss are actually huge fans of the band, and have claimed that they often play Sigur Rós tracks while filming past seasons of the program while in Iceland. Hoever, Band members Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson, Georg Hólm and Orri Páll Dýrason are currently shooting an appearance in Croatia, not Iceland. This means that they’re probably going to show up in a King’s Landing scene. After all, the House Baratheon/Lannister joint coat of arms is currently flying at a castle in Dubrovnik, and where else would you see that flag in Westeros? We can also speculate that they’re going to be playing musicians — their made-up-language-having aesthetic would fit in pretty well into a fictional world full of dragons and giants, after all.
My theory? (Spoiler alert, non-book people — highlight the following text to see) They’ll be at Joffrey and Margarey Tyrell’s wedding. Like come on, that’s gotta be it, right? Why else would there be all this secrecy?
This isn’t the first that musicians have gotten the chance to play around in the Seven Kingdoms; Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol had a cameo in Season 3 as a guy singing “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” during a travelling scene, and Will Champion from Coldplay was a part of that same season’s now infamous Red Wedding scene as a drummer in the band.
In the past, Game of Thrones has also enlisted the help of The National and The Hold Steady, who both performed songs for the show’s end credits (“The Rains of Castamere” and “The Bear and the Maiden Fair,” respectively).
We’d like to think that maybe Benioff and Weiss have been inspired by past musician cameos in beloved nerd properties. You know, like remember that one time *NSYNC was in the Star Wars prequels? No? Sure, they got cut from the theatrical release, but tales of their appearance loomed large at the time. I remember going to that movie just to see them get murdered by stormtroopers. Ah, youth.
