Hold on to Your Giant Purple Dildos, Saints Row IV’s Coming

As part of the process where THQ declared bankruptcy and shed all their valuable assets, Deep Silver happened to pick up both developer Volition and the Saints Row franchise. It was basically a known fact that Volition had been working on a sequel, but the exact manifestation of the game wasn't clear. Well, they've officially announced Saints Row IV, and it apparently involves the gang getting superpowers and an alien invasion. Yeah.

As part of the process where THQ declared bankruptcy and shed all their valuable assets, Deep Silver happened to pick up both developer Volition and the Saints Row franchise. It was basically a known fact that Volition had been working on a sequel, but the exact manifestation of the game wasn’t clear. Well, they’ve officially announced Saints Row IV, and it apparently involves the gang getting superpowers and an alien invasion. Yeah.

For those that maybe aren’t familiar with the franchise, Saints Row is notorious for seeming a bit like Grand Theft Auto but turning the volume up to 11 — the giant purple dildos headline? Yeah, that’s a reference to both a weapon in Saints Row: The Third and something folks received in the mail as part of the game’s marketing push. Just watch the trailer, and all should become clear:

Okay, maybe that’s not all that clear, but you get the idea. Here’s a snippet from the official release:

Now the larger-than-life insanity of the Saints series gets a new twist with a catastrophic alien invasion, and the aliens have transported the Saints to a bizarro-Steelport simulation. Wield gargantuan superpowers and fight to free humanity from alien granddaddy Zinyak’s mental grasp. Escape the simulation that’s trapped the Saints crew, or die trying.

So, yeah. That’s how they get superpowers. Also, the leader of the Saints — the player — is also the President of the United States. If you’ve ever wanted to play a video game where you fight aliens with superpowers as the President inside a simulation of a fictional city, this is probably the one for you.

Saints Row IV officially drops August 20, 2013 on PC and consoles in North America, and three days later everywhere else.
