But for California-based creator Renee (@reneemmonique), a casual trip to Whole Foods became an allegedly exhausting exercise in public hyper-vigilance.
In a TikTok storytime video, Renee claimed that her Whole Foods run for a sandwich and salad was derailed by a persistent stranger. She expressed her awe at the audacity of men who cannot take a hint and continue to make retail spaces uncomfortable for shoppers like her.
Renee’s Whole Foods lunch run began with an unprovoked approach
The incident happened on a recent afternoon when Renee decided to stop by her local Whole Foods market. Adhering to her usual routine, she headed straight toward the fresh deli counter to select a sandwich before pairing it with an option from the salad bar.
However, the second she began browsing the menu, she felt an uncomfortable sensation of someone staring directly at her. According to her, a man slowly walked past her and launched an unprovoked compliment regarding her tattoos.
Hoping to keep the exchange as brief as possible, Renee claimed to have barely offered the stranger a glance. She offered a quick, polite “Thank you,” secured her food container, and immediately shifted down the aisle to put some physical distance between them.

Renee had already mentally moved past the brief exchange. However, she claimed that the stranger had zero intention of letting the conversation drop. As she stood at the Whole Foods salad bar adjusting her food, she allegedly looked up to find the exact same man circling around.
Rather than inspecting the food options or executing a transaction of his own, the individual was supposedly focused on tracking Renee’s movements. According to Renee, he continued to walk laps around the food bar, staring at her intently while ignoring the store items entirely.
“This is definitely weird. Thanks for looking at me,” Renee remarked sharply in her video recap. She called out the absurdity of a grown adult pacing a grocery store aisle just to watch a stranger shop.
An unwanted checkout line confrontation left Renee feeling cornered
Hoping to finalize her trip and escape the uncomfortable environment, Renee navigated away from the fresh food section and headed toward the front register lanes. She paused briefly at the beverage coolers to grab a quick soda before heading toward the payment terminals.
However, the exact second she reached into the cooler, she said that the man materialized directly behind her yet again. Without her even acknowledging his presence, the individual then allegedly leaned in to tell her she was “very beautiful.”
Renee once again offered a muted, non-committal word of thanks without turning her head to make direct eye contact. But as she marched toward the self-checkout terminals, she said that the man executed an incredibly aggressive, awkward maneuver.
Per her account, the man began pulling his shopping cart backwards and began walking in reverse in front of her to block her exit. All this while, Renee claimed that he persistently demanded to know her name. She froze him out, keeping her gaze locked forward as she marched straight into the self-checkout queue to pay and exit the facility.

Corporate supermarket properties emphasize consumer comfort. But the real-world execution often leaves female shoppers managing spatial anxiety alone. A major contributor to persistent unwanted approaches is the failure of people to read non-verbal rejection cues. Renee ended her video by poking fun at the physical discrepancy of the alleged encounter. She pointed out the pure delusion of the man trying to physically intimidate her. “I know I have six-inch heels on today, but I was still like two inches taller than him,” she claimed, throwing her hands up at the audacity of the situation.
