Obsidian, Folks Behind Fallout, Launch Kickstarter for Brand New Franchise

Recommended Videos

Obsidian Entertainment, the company composed of industry veterans behind games like Fallout and Planescape: Torment, has been teasing that something’s coming down the pipe for a few days now. Finally, we know: They’re bringing the band back together making a brand new isometric fantasy role-playing game for PC called Project Eternity. They need the help of their fans, however, as they’re ditching the publisher model and hitting up Kickstarter.

The project’s aiming for a rather hefty total of $1,100,000. Due to the quirks of Kickstarter, if they don’t hit that mark then nothing will happen. No money will change hands, and the project will have been unsuccessful. It won’t likely stop Obsidian from trying again, but failure certainly would be a downer. Even so, as of writing, they’ve already hit $108,550 pledged. I’d say they’re doing pretty well.

The details, as presented on the Kickstarter page, are certainly interesting:

Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

Combat uses a tactical real-time with pause system – positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success. The world map is dotted with unique locations and wilderness ripe for exploration and questing. You’ll create your own character and collect companions along the way – taking him or her not just through this story, but, with your continued support, through future adventures. You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. …and you’ll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.

With all the words they’ve already managed to make up for the setting, hopefully something better than the working title of Project Eternity will bubble up to the surface. Otherwise, see the top image.
