Hayley Atwell Talks Women In Superhero Movies, Says She’d Definitely Do An Agent Carter TV Show

The possibility of Peggy Carter getting her own television show just got one small step closer to reality. After those annoying posters and the negative fanboy reactions to Black Widow’s role in Avengers 2, we’ve been needing some good lady news from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so let’s thank the superhero gods for Hayley Atwell.

The actress, who brought Peggy Carter to life in Captain America: The First Avenger and the solo short film Agent Carter, says she’d be ready for more:

“The one-shot was so successful, the fanbase were like, ‘We want more of Peggy!’ I think Marvel probably take that very seriously, and it’s certainly something I would be a part of doing. I’d be interested to show different sides of Peggy.”

The popularity of Peggy Carter has proven that a woman can be a successful breakout character in a blockbuster like Captain America. Agent Carter fights Nazis, dismantles sexism, and generally kicks butt, all with perfect lipstick and a distinct lack of spandex. It would be a terrible waste to let her character get relegated to flashbacks in Cap’s new films. Besides, with the solid start of Agents of SHIELD, Marvel has already proven that its universe can hold its own on the small screen. SHIELD and Agent’s Carter’s show could tie into each other and give us a Torchwood-esque look into what happens to secondary characters after the heroes are gone. Having two Marvel shows, one with a lot of women in the main cast and another with a woman as the protagonist, would be nothing short of awesome.

Atwell also talked about the necessity of featuring more female characters in superhero stories:

“Where are the women? Where are the women who are leading and not just the hot sex symbol in the tight outfits, or the aggressive ones with their sexy action sequences? Where are the ones that are battling with their own identity like Iron Man is? Or trying to make a difference in the forefront?”

We haven’t had anything close to confirmation that a Peggy Carter show will actually happen, so all of this could still come to naught. Still, we know that it’s a possibility, and that the actress is onboard, so things are looking up. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed Marvel won’t drop the ball on this one and will seize the opportunity to give us more of one kickass lady.
