Ladies And Gentlemen: TV Wonder Woman’s Costume

It’s official. Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive photo of Adrianne Palicki in her Wonder Woman costume. Full photo behind the jump.

As Far as I am Concerned:

One Very Good Thing: Pants. For the love of god yes, pants!

So, three bad things:

  • I’m willing to wait until we get a shot from another angle to judge completely, but does she have a hood ornament on her chest?

I’m a big stickler for having costumes that a character could actually realistically do hero work in (which is exactly why I’m excited about her having pants). It’s really the only criteria that I care about. As long as the color combination isn’t an eye sore and there aren’t any other glaringly silly things about it, I just want a costume that is actually practical for running, jumping, and punching. So,

  • Strapless bustier. Not. Practical. I guess she doesn’t plan on doing cartwheels.
  • Heels. Oh my god, heels. This is one of my biggest pet peeves ever. There are many women who can do amazing badass things while wearing three inch heels (I… am not one of them, to my embarrassment). But nobody chooses three inch heels as their active footwear.

Everything else: Perfectly acceptable. Kudos.

I am all about the pants, but why does it look like this was picked up at a latex fetish shop? They should have gone with a darker color scheme and made everything look like it was made from something more leathery and durable instead of like a cheap vinyl halloween costume. This is too over the top. Plus, heels?

I was holding out hope that this Wonder Woman series would be done right and that Wonder Woman would be tough and capable and naturally beautiful without all the makeup, but if this costume is the standard they’re going for, I’m not feeling reassured at all.

    *sigh*

  • http://twitter.com/MightySquid Kate Falanga

I agree with the points above and would add that it seems a little too shiny but maybe that’s just the picture?

  • Lunitare

Ditto the shiny-fetish-shop look. Also, why are her bracelets silver instead of matching gold? And the strapless bustier? Completely unrealistic. Even the comic added straps! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wonder_Woman_(new_costume)-.jpg

  • Lionmml

I gotta admit the heels piss me off more than anything. The outfit is great for me and would be perfect if she just had flat boots. Which BTW I love about the new Batwoman comic – flat heels!!

  • Anonymous

tttooooo shhhhiiiiiiinnyyyyyy. I am afraid that they are tossing the potential female audience out and going straight for the 15-35 year old male demographic. Please prove me wrong, TV show producers!

  • Barbara Shaurette

I was so excited about this show’s potential – done right, Wonder Woman could be a great strong female character. But that costume (and I love the pants, but the bustier and majorly exposed cleavage really offend me) is a big “screw you” to the female audience. Clearly, this show is not intended for me.

    Needs more Xena.

  • http://twitter.com/xenonightshade Xeno

Yep, definitely looks like a latex fetish shop fancy dress party costume to me too. Definitely agree @trytophan, needs more Xena. She kind of just looks like she’s dressed up to role play with her lover.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001930486436 Wds Ghst

Its the belt that bothers me. She’s going to stab herself in the stomach with that thing.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UGKZDQW7DSG2KTVYFOCFIHY3QQ Steph H

Disappointed by her very obvious boob job, but I guess it’s par for the course for most actresses, even one as beautiful as Adrianne :/ Outfit does look way to shiny and cheap, too, unfortunately. Sigh, I feel a middling to bad superheroine flick on coming on, a la Elektra.

  • WonderWarrior

Hey, just wanted to point out that in the comic book WW’s bracelets have been silver for decades (up until this new “reboot” version they are pritning now). Seems like they took the bright color scheme of the 70′s TV show costume and melded it with the current comic version. It’s just too bright and shiny! And what is with that red star in the middle of her chest?! That has to go at a minimum.

  • Sierra

I’m happy that there are pants, but those pants don’t look like they fit her at all. The whole thing is just disappointing.

  • http://lokiale.wordpress.com/ Lokiale

That’s just how boobs look in bustiers. Bustiers lift and separate to the extreme. If you wear one you can actually hear little X-treme guitar riffs going off in your ears until you take it off again.

  • http://twitter.com/MildlyAmused Donna D.

I’ve seen better Photoshop jobs but this still gives an idea how less is not always trashy. (re-skined Xena I think).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emma-Jones/1539134495 Emma Jones

You know, I’m really not all that happy about the pants, for a number of different reasons. First, I find pants uncomfortable, especially if they’re tight, like these are. Second, I find far more flexibility in a skirt, shorts or dress. Yeah, maybe there is more chance of sneaking a glance of underwear, but does a superhero really care about that? As for the cold issue, long socks suffice. Third, I think the color is way too bright, making the whole thing look just a bit silly.

I suppose if they were leggings, not stiff-looking pants, I might like them more on a practical level, but as it stands, I’m not too thrilled.

As for the bustier and heels, yeah, they’re a bit ridiculous.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jesuisjenn Jenn Reid

looks like a halloween costume. I’ve seen better wonder woman suits at cons.
do they have a $5000 budget for this show or something? no excuse for it to look this cheap.

  • Celeste

    (1) Concurred with all the cheap-fetish-shop comments
    (2) Has anyone here ever worn tight latex or vinyl for extended periods of time? They don’t breathe. CHAFING AND SWEAT = not sexy, not practical superhero gear.

  • Chucky

@WW – Please don’t use your Lasso of Truth on me and ask about your outfit. :(

I’m curious: Black Canary: pants or no pants? I don’t think pants are all that important for ‘realistic’ superhero costumes considering that gymnasts and ballerinas wear leotards. As I am neither, I’m sure I couldn’t high kick criminals in heels and/or tap pants, but I believe without a shadow of a doubt that an Amazon could.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Tice/69000650 Emily Tice

My issue with the pants, aside from the shiny-ness/latex club-wear feel, is, hello? Does lady own a vagina? How does she not have a massive camel-toe wearing those things? I don’t think you can do much derring-do with a constant camel-toe, but maybe that’s just a personal choice I’ve made for myself.

I got stuck on a merry-go-round as a kid when my skirt got all tangled up on the pony’s plastic, wavy mane. I cried for HOURS. It was all very traumatic.

  • http://amidstdancers.blogspot.com/ Shard Aerliss

The colours and shininess MIGHT be down to how it’s going to look on film… we’ll see.

The fact it looks like vinyl or latex is bizarre. Latex? Really? Eeeew, sweaty.

But honestly, I’ve felt all along that this was NOT going to be a show for all types of audience, so I’m not surprised by the close fit, the mad heels or the bustier.

I just noticed the stars running down the outside of the pants. Like track pants.

I think I’d prefer to see Wonder Woman in actual track pants and a top with support straps of some kind.

But, most of all, I’d prefer not to have this show exist.

  • http://twitter.com/BeccaTheWitz Rebecca H

I concur with previous posts about shiney-ness and latex. Aside from the wtf-ery of putting her in heels, (imo) the boots would look better in red.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emma-Jones/1539134495 Emma Jones

Aw. I don’t know, I guess I would go for shorts, ’cause each kind of skirt has its ups and downs; in that the tight ones ride up, and the flowy ones get caught on things.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emma-Jones/1539134495 Emma Jones

Yeah, I noticed that. The crotch of her pants kind of throws her proportions off, somehow. I’m still trying to get my head around where her crotch actually is.

  • http://ravenscholar.blogspot.com RavenScholar

The boots should be red. Having them blue makes them blend into the pants.

  • VampireZombeh

…I was hoping for a little more structure. This looks like a $20 Halloween costume, you know? Thin spandex material. I agree, it’s nice to have her in pants but.. I don’t know it looks…cheap…and plastic-y

  • Jay_wynne

$14.99…it was on sale. it looks silly. Especially her boobies poppin’ out all over.

Costume, meh. But can we have a Wonder Woman who seems a little less, um, breakable?

I said the same thing! Xena should of played this role..

  • http://amidstdancers.blogspot.com/ Shard Aerliss

Lucy Lawless is probably a little too old now (43). She still looks stunning though. Seen Spartacus?

  • Boltfinger

When I accidentally came across this picture, I thought this woman was posing for a costume that you can buy for Halloween; now I realize that it’s for a tv show–truly disappointed. I don’t think she has the look, and the costume is way too saturated. Should’ve been darker reds, darker blues, and an actress who doesn’t look like she’s doing a cosplay with it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cmunoz1 Christian Munoz

This costume looks TOTALLY cheap! I wont watch! The show already sucks (based on the outfit)! What a drag that they couldn’t stay more true to the original costume! If it were Superman or Batman they would have put more thought on it, instead of just trying to camp it up! THIS is why Wonder Woman movies and the original show haven’t and didn’t make it! NO ONE takes Wonder Woman seriously! Too bad! She’s always been my favorite SUPERHEROINE! She’s the underdog in a world full of male-cheuvanistic, MALE Superheroes….She gets no love because men are intimidated by her power and her beauty and her strength! If they make a joke and a mockery of her, she’ll be put (once again) by the curb for trash-collection. Shame on you (whomever created this piece-of-s*** costume)!

My husband pointed out that it wasn’t just the outfit that looked like it was made of plastic.

  • http://blissful-madness.com Girl Automatic

I am willing to hold out hope that the only reason the costume looks super-shiny is due to the lighting, and that once Wonder Woman is in an actual environment–i.e., some urban area or outside in natural light–it won’t look as garish. Photography lights, last I checked, are bright. Plus the usage of flash bulbs…

All the same, I agree on the heels and strapless bit. Not quite practical, but we’ll see what happens.

  • Jade

Ok, as a modern woman I too am glad about the pants. BUT! This is WONDER WOMAN! Why change what a SUPER HERO/HEROINE is just because we as practical women know it’s not possible. Wonder Woman is an Amazon that was raised and trained as a WARRIOR, and has a suit that was blessed by the gods to give her powers. She CAN do it in heels, and the costume should NOT be changed. I mean, think about it, do you really think that the Amazons wore pants???? It seems to me that this “geek” site is not very geek at all. Otherwise I think that everyone would want the costume to stay true to the original as possible. Super Heros/heroines are not supposed to be practical, that’s what makes the “super”….
But really, that costume looks like a Walmart Halloween costume gone wrong.

  • Mauragyn

I agree with all the comments above and am so glad to hear them. Since I was a little girl running around in my Wonder Woman Underoos I have been waiting for a costume that looked right. Boots yes..but not such obnoxious pointy heels. The bustier top needs straps of some sort. But the pants? they are lame. Too non-stretchy. More Lycra less Latex. I like the idea of a skirt with kickpants, it shows off leg musculature better, but she cold have some leggings for cold weather. All over too shiny. I like the silver armbands..as they should be:)

I think I need to just collect the Xena series DVDs and be happy with that. Xena is what Wonder Woman should have been if actual woman-loving men and strong women were making the show. And I’ve been a WW fan since I was six.

  • http://twitter.com/8R4D104C71V3 brad

what would make you think it’s aimed towards the female demographic? look at what she’s wearing. that’s almost fap material.

  • Nt

A real amazon warrior would have cut off one of her breasts so she could shoot arrows… err… swing the lasso of truth better.

  • Not at all impressed

Well…those pants don’t look like they fit at all, but I guess we’ve been spared the camel toe. She does look a bit like she could stab herself in the stomach with her belt and belly piece. She does look like she went shopping at the sex shop for role-play night. She does look a bit shiny. She does also look like she’s got a hood ornament on her chest.
It’s sexy, but not at all practical. You can’t even run on dirt in heels! What’s she gonna do? Boob them to death when she trips and falls out of that thing?

  • http://www.trommetter.com/log/ JasonTromm

Didn’t Ginger Rogers always brag she was a better dancer than Fred Astaire because she would do everything he could? (Except she did it backwards and in heels!)

Just sayin’… The heels aren’t the problem. Besides, maybe they’re an intentional power-limiter, like all those characters in anime who wear “500 pound shirts”, just to take them off in the middle of a fight to freak out their opponents.

Leather is the way to go, not vinyl.

  • http://www.trommetter.com/log/ JasonTromm

I like that much better than the real costume.

  • Anna

She looks like what she is- a comic-book superheroine. No, it’s not practical. Neither is Superman’s or Batman’s cape. No, it’s not aimed at women. No, it’s not “realistic”. But, neither is the lasso of truth, bullet-deflecting bracers, or many other things about superheroes. That’s what makes them superheroes. They’re NOT real. The pants look like an attempt at appeasing all the complaints about her original outfit not being practical, but they stay as true as they could. Also, she never was supposed to LOOK like a strong amazon warrior. Peter Parker didn’t LOOK like a superhero either.

She looks like a cartoon. Can’t wait to watch the show.

  • http://grantroot.myopenid.com/ Grant Root

Yeah, but I wish she weren’t. She would have been perfect!

  • http://www.facebook.com/AlskaNoelle Noel Maria Johnson

I’m with everyone on the poor choice in material, the makeup, the strapless bustier (although, that is and has always been a Wonder Woman trademark) and all of that. My personal biggest issue with the costume design, is the over all look and balance of the costume.

Because the boots are blue with gold instead of red with white (like they’ve been for YEARS) and the random red stars the entire costume looks unbalanced to me. It looks cut off at the waist-the top half is a completely different red and gold costume than the blue and gold bottom. The boots could have been red with white stripes and a gold eagle detail and the red stars on the bustier could have been white. That would have made it SO much more balanced. Also, I liked the look of Wonder Woman’s tiara in the comics. It was a trade mark.

That being said, there are a few things I like about this new costume, but the bad things outweigh the good SO MUCH that it really doesn’t even look like Wonder Woman to me anymore. Honestly, it looks like a cheap, knock off costume designed for a porn star or stripper.

  • Tina

The fake boobs and heels put me off the most. I am so over the objectification of women. Why can’t she be a *real* woman? Strong and bad-ass!! She just looks like a cheap bimbo here. I have no desire to watch… which sucks because I love Wonder Woman. :(

  • Tina

Nah, those boobs are fake. Real corsets can push up to an extent, but that’s a cheap bustier with no real boning. Real boobs couldn’t define gravity at that size and weight. I make corsets and I know from experience.

  • http://twitter.com/dupreewith2es Dupree

How have I JUST found this site? Over at blastr, my local comic book store, and other boys’ club I get to hear about how hot she looks. Here I get to hear debates concerning male gaze, fandom, AND fashion design?!

I’m literally *this* close to shedding tears of joy.

  • Dave

It’s all about sex appeal and money. If it was superman with a new sexy outfit you woman would not have a problem with it. With any business sense at all it may become more clear. I don’t think enough skin is showing. Besides it will always be men as majority viewers for wonderwoman.

  • Dave

Oh….I sense some jelousy. Let it go…..it’s all about sales….money. What would you rather…a power suit and and a bulge in the pants?

  • Sierramadre

Oh [insert inappropriate ellipsis here], I sense some mansplaining!

  • Tambine

Thanks for telling me what I think Dave! It’s so hard for my tiny woman brain to figure these things out for myself. Oh look, something pink!

  • Dave

How did you know pink was my favorite colour? Did you even get the point……..by no means was I bashing woman. Business is business….and I was telling you what I think. When did this become about you? Oh…I get it…YOU GO GIRL….

Yeah, this is not very well thought out and waaaay too shiny. If she is a real world business woman then why is she dressing like a ’90′s street walker? To hide her identity? Those pants, whilst they do cover the legs are not made for running jumping…or should I say sweating (girls don’t sweat they glisten!).

It also doesn’t seem like she “owns” the character (let alone the costume). She’s just a girl on Halloween. Go hire that girl from the Big Bang Theory to do it, oh wait, she works for CBS.

  • HighFiveMachine
  • JoKurrent

Adrienne is beautiful and rather tall (5’11″, but she’s still shorter than WW should be), but I’m not a fan of this costume for multiple reasons.

1–What the heck was wrong with the original costume??? Not the “modern” outfit, but the classic eagle/star-spangled outfit. It looked amazing and remains as timeless a design as any in comics.

2–BLUE boots? Seriously? With blue pants? Yuck. Heels are nightmares to run in, but WW can do it. If you want a more practical look, drop the heels, but for heaven’s sake keep the footwear red.

3–Those bracelets looks as amazonian as something off the shelf at a seasonal Halloween store. Make them BIG and THICK, like they can actually deflect bullets and heat vision. You know, like how they’re drawn?

4–I’m not a fan of the pants. The crotch is going to be all sorts of camel-toe nightmare (especially with that seam!), whatever shiny fabric that’s made of isn’t going to breath very well, and there are no stars! Again, what’s wrong with the original source material? Show off WW’s thighs! She wasn’t ashamed of her body in the least, so the show’s developers shouldn’t be either.

5–The lasso. (See #3 above.) I can only hope we’ll get some post-production effect that makes it actually glows like it’s supposed to do. But I’m not getting my hopes up.

Overall, not a fan of the costume at all. Adrienne is a good choice, but I think her outfit is going to be a negative.

  • JoKurrent

Okay, addendum to my previous post.

Just noticed the stars on the sides of the pants upon a more detailed inspection. Plus for including them, but an offsetting minus for them being gold, not white. Not impressed.

And I want to agree with the other posters who have brought up the fact that Adrienne’s musculature doesn’t really match WW’s build. Honestly, I’ve been terrified that they were going to cast Megan Fox or Jessica Biel or someone who’s 5’4″ to 5’7″ just because they’re pretty, brunette, and popular. Actually getting a taller actress was nice. However, I’d really like to have seen a much more muscular WW as well.

Wonder Woman is strong. She LOOKS strong. Batman has to look up to her; it’s well documented in the comics. Her biceps and triceps are bigger than any of the Justice League except for Superman and J’onn J’onzz. Her thighs are obviously muscular, and the cut of her briefs emphasizes their definition and size even more noticeably. Why can’t we have this?

  • AdAstra47

Just an FYI, as a DDD cup who does just fine at archery, I’ve never understood that particular myth about the Amazons.
