FX’s Legion looks confusing already. But not necessarily in a bad way. First of all, it remains to be seen to what extent Legion will co-exist with the canon of the X-Men movies. But also, the narrative looks pretty experimental as well, and like it’s potentially going to diverge from the comic book version.
As the trailer shows, David Haller (played by Dan Stevens) sees visions and hears voices that aren’t real, or so he believes… until he learns that his supposed schizophrenia diagnosis doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story, and that the years he’s spent in psychiatric hospitals hasn’t really helped him figure out the real problem. He’s got mutant powers, turns out.
In the comics, Legion’s story is a little different, as is his diagnosis; he’s more of an anti-hero, and his diagnosis is a form of dissociative identity disorder, albeit not necessarily an accurate portrayal. This TV adaptation looks different in multiple ways, since Legion seems like less of a potentially villainous character and more of a naive victim of circumstance. He’s just a guy with a mutant power that no one understands, and as he figures it out, he’ll potentially be able to communicate with more and more people.
This trailer still doesn’t let us in on the whole story, though, such as whether Legion will end up using his powers for good or ill. We can already see that there are multiple mysterious people vying to use Legion’s mutant power, though, and he’ll have to decide who deserves his trust, and where his path will lead.
By the way, we’ve also finally got a release date! The first episode airs on Wednesday, February 8 at 10 PM ET/PT.
