Epic Trailer Lives Up To Its Name

We’re pretty excited about Epic, the new film from the creators of Ice Age and Rio. Why? Well, for starters, it’s about a teenage girl who shrinks down to the size of a leaf and teams up with tiny forest fairies and bugs to save the world as we know it. Oh, and the film boasts a star-studded cast, including Amanda Seyfried, Beyoncé Knowles, and Aziz Ansari. The trailer is seriously lacking clips of its protagonist, but the gorgeous visuals and the promise of a girl lead is pretty exciting. Epic will hit theaters May in 2013.

Hmm. So… this is Fern Gully, with the two main roles gender-swapped? Don’t get me wrong, I love Fern Gully and have no problem with that. I do notice, however,  that for a movie with a female lead, she’s in this trailer about 1/8th as much as the little dude-in-armour…?

(Perhaps future trailers will have more of her?)

This looks beautiful. I got goosebumps at the beginning there.

I’m going with Fern Gully crossed with Avatar. Oh sure there’s no “humanity is bad” in this trailer but every nature movie ends up there.

Outside of “there is a magical world just out of sight” type setting similar to Fern Gully, The Littles, The Burrowers + Secret World of Arrietty, among many many others-I don’t see that much of a Fern Gully remake in the trailer.  At least nothing compared to something like “Avatar”.  While I’m not going to say I don’t see similarities, I don’t see the whole “Humans bad! The Earth must be saved from them” trope that was the core plot of Fern Gully.

This looks cute. Sorta like a more action filled version of Fern Gully.

I am ridiculously pleased to see a trailer with minimal dialogue. Too many animated movies have the wise-cracking commercials. Also…this looks really pretty.

FernGully crossed with Avatar? Isn’t that redundant? Avatar was already basically a FernGully remake with a bigger budget. :P

In all seriousness, this looks pretty cool. I’m sold. I tend to have a fondness for stories about tiny people. Those were always my favorite stories as a kid.

… So, this is Ferngully in CGI, with the genders swapped? Hopefully it’ll hold up better than Ferngully did.
