Stamps are usually mailed to oneself on the first day of issue to make them more rare and valuable.
When the Elvis Stamps came out, a lot of people mailed them to nonexistent addresses, so they’d be marked “return to sender – address unknown” and sent back to the return address.
I’ll lay odds that if these come out earlier in the year, a great many of stamps will be bought, saved, and mailed out on postcards on November 23rd.

Wouldn’t the stamps be cancelled and rendered worthless?

I got the Hobbit stamps from my brother on the other side of the planet. He’s not a big enough Whovian to want these in return, unfortunately.

Yes, you save some, mail off a bunch of others so the price of the ones you save goes up for future collectors.

Actually, to an old-school stamp collector, canceled stamps are preferred. First day of issue stamps are even more rare, and in the cases I mentioned above, stamps canceled on a thematically important day, even more so.
