What's with the name?

Allow us to explain.

Hello Sweetie

The Doctor Who Season 7 Finale Gets A Name And A River

What’s in a name?

Yesterday we showed you three new posters (as well as 10 & 11 in costume together) for upcoming episodes of Doctor Who. We’ve got a fourth today, which just also happens to be the Season 7 finale. As you can see, the episode is titled “The Name of the Doctor.”

“There’s going to be a revelation. I’m not teasing. I’m not wrong-footing you – you’re about to learn something about the Doctor that you never knew before. And I think you’re in for a shock,” wrote Steven Moffat for Radio Times.

Whether it will actually be the Doctor’s Gallifreyan name remains to be seen but it seems we’ll at least find out something new about our old time traveling friend.

The poster also reveals actress Alex Kingston’s return as River Song. Could we be coming to the end of her story arc? We know from a story  told in “Forest of the Dead,” the Doctor revealed his name to her in what wound up being the last time he would see her in his timeline. Thoughts?

I don’t want to know his name!

  • Dave

What’s in a name? That which we call a nose by any other name would still smell. /the other rsc

Apparently his name is sealed/written in the Medusa Cascade; I wonder if that will come up again.

  • Allison Hoekwater

    Me neither!

  • Robin S

Just ’cause Moffat says ‘for real this time, I’m not lying to you guys!’ doesn’t mean he’s not still lying. C’mon! We know how this works by now. Also Moffat’s not particularly good at big revelations. I’m worried this’ll be a bigger letdown than a twist in a new. Night Shyamalan movie.

  • Kate Reynolds

Wait, I don’t remember there being anything in Forest of the Dead that says River learned his name when he saw her the time before that. Here’s the quote exactly:

Funny thing is, this means you’ve always known how I was going to die. All the time we’ve been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, I mean – you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the singing towers. Oh, what a night that was! The towers sang, and you cried.

    Autodestuct in one minute.

You wouldn’t tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me your screwdriver – that should’ve been a clue.

Nothing here indicating when River learned his name.

I’m generally skeptical when someone makes a prediction about the Moffat-written show using plot points from Davies, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Medusa Cascade was an exception.

Davies knew he was leaving (and being replaced by Moffat)when season 4 was written, and beyond the Cascade being a location there was never a payoff to the line about the Doctor’s name being “written” there. Its possible he had asked Moffat if there was anything he could plant to be paid off later. If Moffat’s been planning to share the name of the Doctor for a while…

  • Jill Pantozzi

I may be confusing that conversation about the date with when he specifically tells her but she whispers his name to him in the episode so he knows to trust her.

I think it’s setting up season 8 as being the last season with Matt and possibly Moffat. I think this is the beginning of tying up everything with River and whatever else in Moffat’s run to clean it all up and get it ready for the new team in season 9.

  • Lisa Jensen

Forgive my ignorance, as I am not a Doctor Who fan, but I thought they already revealed his name. Wasn’t it Theta?

  • Bittersweet Fountain

No, “Theta Sigma” was his nickname in school. I think it was during the Baker years that it was mentioned, and someone on another site said it was because the Doctor made such terrible grades in school and “Theta Sigma” is apparently a very poor grade.

  • Hannah T

She does, and he says: “There’s only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name. There’s only one time I could…”
But that’s right at the end and not connected to the last date.

  • Ida Männistö

Ughhh. Doesn’t the Doctor tell River his name in their wedding, in the Wedding of River Song? It’s a part of the ceremony?

  • Psychotronic (Michael F.)

There was a book in 1972 called “Making of Doctor Who”, by Malcolm Hulke and Terrance Dicks which gave his name as a mathematical formula, ∂³∑x² — However, the canonicity of the book as with all tie-in materials is debatable.

OK, let’s see how they can dodge this one:

-The Doctor is given a name/nickname/title at the end of the episode
-Alias is somehow relevant to episode
-Episode is centered around his name (ultimate destruction of the universe, etc. etc.) without actually mentioning it
-He mentions it to River but is drowned out by a passing train
    -”Some call me… Tim.”

  • Anonymous

Nooope. He says he is going to and whispers in her ear. Later flashbacky scene shows that that’s not what he says.

  • John Fuex

    His name is “Ford Prefect”

The last time the Doctor saw River was when he took her to the Singing Towers and gave her his sonic screwdriver. This appears to be the Fields of Trenzalore. This isnt neccesarily River’s last appearance.

  • Joshua Paul Hawkins

I have a feeling it’s going to probably have something to do with “Bad Wolf”. Where ever there’s Rose that seems to be the case. But if that question is answered where do the fields of Trenzelor and The Fall of The 11th come in? Is the Fall death or could this be the beginning of “The Valeyard” or a like peronality of the Doctor? Or is all this an elaborate plot to save himself and maybe even River yet again just like he did with the Teselecta in “TWRS”?

  • Joshua Paul Hawkins

I would be pretty upset if Tennant isn’t the Meta-Crisis Doctor because they have that scene where Donna explains how they can create a Tardis just waiting to be used. Despite your opinion of Moffatt turning his back on Davies’s ideas in general aside from bringing back the original Cybermen he’s still keeping pretty well attached to that era. But then again we really don’t know at this point if the Doctor only has 2 regenerations left, if the power he gave River to fix her hand in “Angels/Manhattan” could give her the ability to regenerate again instead of die”, if the “Fall of The 11th” means death or something a little more metaphorical etc etc.

  • Joshua Paul Hawkins

I am wondering if the power he gave her to fix her hand in Angels/Manhattan is enough to give her a regeneration or not.

  • Sophie

I have very mixed feelings about this.

  • Joshua S. MacDougall

I also don’t want to know his name, what would that really mean? Honestly? Part of what makes Doctor Who so great is the mystery that is the Doctor. That being said, I don’t think they’ll actually give his name.I do think that whatever happens with his name being said will be the catalyst for the 50th Anniversary.

  • Shell Germann

We have no context for “when” he told her, because this is what went down in the library – “The last time I saw you—the real you, the future you, I mean—you turned
up on my doorstep with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to
Derillium. To see the Singing Towers. Oh, what a night that was. The
towers sang, and you cried. You wouldn’t tell me why but I suppose you
knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me
your screwdriver. That should have been a clue. There’s nothing you can

  • Francisco Bello

the name will be revealed to Riversong not us.

  • Kate Reynolds

He’s a cool frood who really knows where his towel is.

Lord forbid we have a season finale without River Song…aahhhkkk I am sooo ready for her character to come to and end, hopefully this will be it. I love Alex, and it’s not even her as a character that I hate, but they frame her as the Doctor’s freaking soul mate. The Doctor’s infatuation with her is downright wrong for his personality. He is a man of science, intelligence and peace whenever it is a possibility. She shows up, shoots stuff, and asks questions later. Everyone else in the galaxy he comes across that shows these charachter traits he downright despises! It doesn’t matter that she is smart, so is a Dalek, and something tells me the doctor probably would regard her as such.

  • Savannah Nicole Logsdon-Breaks

I wonder if it’s going to be a play on what he’s called now that he’s wiped himself/been wiped in some cases from databases? I mean in the past we’ve learned names that Daleks had for him in the past, and what “Doctor” has come to mean for some peoples…

I’ll be sad if we get an actual real name though.

  • Savannah Nicole Logsdon-Breaks

If so it would create a paradox in his timeline right there. He already knows that version of her body dies in the Library, even if her soul/consciousness continues in the Library database. Having her regen would disrupt that point in his timeline.

  • Fran

I doubt they will reveal his name. I KNOW they will reveal something about him or his past life but some things need to remain a mystery and I think the doctor’s name is one of those things. If they say what the doctor’s name truly is, the show becomes pointless since the actual title is based on the question “Doctor Who?”

  • Joshua Paul Hawkins

Well, we came close Sophia. :-D

  • Joshua Paul Hawkins

Not if he has to go back to the Library after the fact. Just saying.
