Woman tells cops she doesn’t need to be detained. Then they reveal she allegedly stole $25,000 worth of goods at Target

She thought she could change their minds. That was just the beginning

Getting caught shoplifting is bad enough. But one woman at Target seemed convinced she could talk her way out of being detained. Even when officers refused to let her leave, she insisted they didn’t need to detain her.

A Target shoplifting arrest involving thousands of dollars is already serious trouble. But this woman seemed more concerned about her dog waiting at home than the consequences she was facing.

In a TikTok video shared by POLICE Real (@policereal1), which has received over 54,400 views, officers confront a 48-year-old woman accused of shoplifting at Target. She repeatedly begs them to let her go, but the amount of merchandise involved makes things much more serious.

What she didn’t realize made things even worse

The encounter begins with an officer informing the woman that she’s being detained for shoplifting. “Sir, you don’t have to detain me,” she responds. When officers direct her toward the store’s asset protection office, she protests again. “Dude, I don’t need to be detained.”

One officer makes the options clear: “It’s either you come with us without cuffs or with cuffs.” The woman then asks whether she’s going to jail, but officers explain that she’s currently being detained.

She soon changes her approach, asking whether she can simply pay for the merchandise. “It’s too late now,” an officer replies. She then explains that she lives alone and has a dog waiting at home with nobody to care for it.

“Probably should have thought of that beforehand,” an officer remarks. The woman responds, “And don’t you think I realize that?”

Officers explain that Target’s surveillance cameras captured her activities inside the store. While Target may sometimes let suspected shoplifters continue shopping, one officer claims they had watched the woman for approximately 30 minutes and could distinguish between the merchandise she paid for and the items she allegedly stole.

“This is a huge store. They got cameras everywhere,” one officer tells her, criticizing her decision. He also warns that cameras can zoom in on checkout transactions.

The situation becomes more serious when officers discuss the merchandise’s value. One estimates that the ink cartridges alone are worth over $500. Another tells her she’s “sitting at $2,400” for what she allegedly took.

When she asks whether an arrest is necessary, officers explain the situation. The amount makes it a felony-level case.

Despite facing arrest, the woman remains focused on getting home. She repeatedly asks whether she’ll spend the night in jail and whether she can arrange her release that day.

Officers explain that they cannot guarantee anything. One advises her to arrange care for her dog immediately, since she might have to appear before a judge.

But she continues asking about bond and court appearances. Eventually, an officer explains that those decisions belong to the judge.

Then comes another surprising moment. As officers prepare to handcuff her, she asks about getting a refund for a box she purchased.

“You did pay for the box. We saw that. Just not the contents inside,” a store employee explains.

According to the video’s closing narration, she was charged with felony shoplifting. She also received a lifetime ban from Target.

“But she has a dog!!” one viewer joked. Another mocked her objections, writing, “I don’t understand, she clearly said she didn’t need to be detained?”

Some viewers questioned the amount of merchandise allegedly stolen. “What in Target is worth $25K?” one asked. Another wondered, “What do they sell in there that comes to 25,000 dollars?”

Others focused on the refund request. “Wow I can’t believe she wanted a refund on a box after stealing thousands,” one commenter remarked. Another viewer offered a simpler observation: “Easy. Don’t shoplift!”
