Trader Joe’s has earned a reputation for selling affordable private-label groceries that often become favourites among regular shoppers. From frozen meals to seasonal snacks, many of its products are widely shared and reviewed on TikTok, where customers frequently post about their latest finds.
Those posts often begin as simple product reviews but can quickly shift when something unexpected appears. The conversation then turns to quality control and whether the issue could affect more than one purchase.
That is what happened after Brooklyn TikTok creator @gghimbap shared a video about a recently purchased bag of Trader Joe’s Hot Honey Popcorn. She claimed she found an unknown cloth-like object inside the sealed bag.
People quickly started asking questions
The video begins with the creator showing a bag of Trader Joe’s Hot Honey Popcorn. She then shows an unidentified cloth-like object that she claims was inside the bag.
The creator said the popcorn had become one of her favourite Trader Joe’s snacks before the discovery. She claimed she had bought the bag the previous day and returned it to the store after finding the object.
Trader Joe’s has not publicly addressed the specific TikTok video. On its Food Safety Overview page, however, the retailer says food safety is a key part of its operations. The company says it works with suppliers to ensure products meet both regulatory requirements and its own quality standards. Trader Joe’s also says it reviews customer complaints, conducts testing when appropriate and, if a safety issue is identified, may remove affected products from sale or issue recalls.
One of the top comments came from a user who said they were a former Trader Joe’s crew member. They said the company takes food safety seriously and believed the report would likely be investigated through its normal quality control process.
“As a former Crew Member (I don’t speak for the brand/company), the store, and the mates (managers) will take care of the reports, they take food safety very seriously. For example, if a box is damaged, or a bag is sliced through, it doesn’t even make it to the shelf. So this happened at the warehouse level, and there will most likely be a quality hold sent around to all stores to pull that specific snack item until it is resolved.”
The comment led many viewers to believe the problem may have happened before the popcorn reached the store. Several commenters also questioned whether the incident could affect more than a single bag.
“They are going to have to do recall for that batch. All the bags are probably contaminated.” Another viewer wrote, “the sanitation people seriously left a microfiber towel in the machines that’s definitely a multi-billion dollar lawsuit waiting.”
Others initially thought the object was part of the snack itself before taking a closer look. “At first I thought blue corn tortilla chips got mixed in. I guess not.” Another joked, “Man my fatass thought those were blue corn tortilla chips at first. I need to go back to bed.”
Others shared their own experiences shopping at Trader Joe’s. “Yea I found pebbles in my lentil soup. They have a QC issue. And their produce spoils abnormally fast.” Another said, “Found a magnet in my husbands yogurt from there and all they did was send us a 20$ voucher lol”
Similar complaints have surfaced online before, including one shopper who said they found bugs in Trader Joe’s rice, while another customer claimed a container of chocolate-covered raisins included an unexpected peanut despite the product’s labelling, raising fresh questions about quality control and packaging.
