A Northern Virginia woman says a routine food order at a Wingstop restaurant turned disturbing when a racial slur appeared on both her receipt and the in-store order tracking system. The customer, Nita Sutherland, described the incident during an interview with FOX 5 DC. According to Sutherland, the incident happened on Friday, June 12, 2026, at a Wingstop location on Lorton Market Street in Fairfax County.

Sutherland said she placed an order for food and clearly provided her first name, spelling it out as “N-I-T-A” for the employee taking the order. She later said she saw a racial slur printed where her name should have appeared on the order stickers attached to her food bags. She also saw the same term displayed on the restaurant’s kitchen order screen.

Sutherland told FOX 5 DC she immediately raised concerns with staff after seeing the language. She said she asked to speak with a manager and questioned whether the information could be corrected on the screen. In her account, the manager did not remove the order from the display at that time.

Wingstop manager’s alleged response: “didn’t mean anything by it”

According to Sutherland, the manager also told her the employee “didn’t mean anything by it,” and the worker returned to duties without offering an apology. She said the response left her frustrated and that she focused on preserving the order stickers as evidence of what she saw.

Sutherland said she felt dismissed when she first raised the issue in the restaurant. FOX 5 DC reported that she ultimately left the location after the exchange while continuing to seek answers about how the language appeared in the system.

Wingstop corporate later responded in a statement provided to FOX 5 DC. The company said discrimination and hateful behavior do not align with its values and stated that it does not tolerate such conduct in its restaurants. Wingstop also said the franchise owner investigated the incident and terminated the employee involved following its review.

The company further indicated that staff at the location would undergo sensitivity training after the incident, according to its statement reported by FOX 5 DC. Wingstop did not publicly release additional technical details about how the term appeared on the order screen or receipt.

As of this report, the claims rely primarily on Sutherland’s statements and the company’s response. No independent investigation results or official law enforcement findings have been released publicly regarding the incident.

Wingstop, a national fast-food chain specializing in chicken wings, operates both corporate and franchised locations across the United States. Separate but similar disputes involving order-entry systems and alleged offensive language have circulated on social media in recent years, as reported by Newsweek and other outlets.

As news of the Virginia Wingstop incident spread online, one comment noted, “Manager should have walked that employee instantly. That they didn’t means they’re unfit to manage. This would never have made the news if they did the right thing.”
