‘This just took $5,000-$10,000 off this bag’: Arizona woman sends ‘rare’ Birkin to The RealReal. She can’t believe how the send it back

A woman tries to sell her rare Birkin on luxury consignment retailer The RealReal, but gets a notification that they plan to send it back to her. She says she’ll never send them a bag again after seeing the condition it returned in.
In a video with over 1.3 million views, TikToker Woahkenzy (@woahkenzyy) shows the unopened shipping box with a large dent on the side. She laments that previous items she received from The RealReal have been damaged, and questions why she trusted the company again.
“If you damage the box of this type of bag, you take value off,” she explains, holding the orange Hermes box. At first glance, she doesn’t think the box is damaged. Then she sees a tear on one of the corners.
“I know it’s a little crack. How [expletive] hard is it to wrap your [expletive] boxes?” she questions.
Was the Birkin bag devalued by The RealReal?
The TikToker carefully removes the bag cover from the rare Birkin, holding her breath and hoping that there is no damage to the actual bag. She quickly notices that The RealReal seemingly removed the protective covering on the bag’s hardware.
“I could cry. What is wrong with you?” she continues. “If you know, that literally devalues the bag.”
She explains that the damaged box and missing hardware covering could devalue the bag by $5,000 to $10,000.
“Why would you not return my bag to me in the same condition I send it to you in?” she asks. At the end of the clip, she also claims that The RealReal misfolded some of the leather on the side of the bag, causing a crease.
In a follow-up video, Woahkenzy discovers more wrong with the packaging of the bag. The bag’s key was out of its protective cloth bag, with other protective coverings “tossed” into the bag.
“Why not put the [expletive] back the same way you found it?” she asks.
Other sellers share their The RealReal experiences
Woahkenzy isn’t the only TikToker to claim that The RealReal damaged their expensive, rare Birkins. The Mary Sue recently reported that another seller received their rare Birkin bag in similar condition, with a ripped bag and missing protective covering.
On the r/handbags subreddit, other sellers share their experience trying to consign their luxury bags with The RealReal.
“Decided to consign an old gucci d-ring tote bag, it’s been two months since they received and it isn’t priced I reached out. those mfs lost or damaged my bag… they say they’ll pay out consignment rate but I am just so SAD for some reason,” one laments, suggesting that The RealReal misplaced their bag.
However, other frequent sellers say The RealReal rarely damages or misplaces items.
Another writes, “I’ve consigned many yrs with TRR and only lost 1 item. In my experience it’s rare this happens but when it does ppl are very vocal. They paid me out well when it did get lost.”
What do viewers think she should do?
In the comments of Woahkenzy’s video, viewers suggest how she should handle the devaluation of her Birkin.
“Umm so you know you can sue for the depreciation they caused. Just take them to civil court and sue!” one remarks.
“For that amount they getting a lawsuit or buying it at the offer rate,” a second adds.
“And it’s a blue box noooooooo. I consign with them monthly and when they have screwed things up you can reach out to your rep or customer service and they will negotiate a reimbursement so the damages,” another frequent seller says.
Others wonder if someone used the bag before returning it to her.
“I’m livid for you. My eyes are watering. It’s almost like somebody wore it,” a commenter writes.
Another suggests, “It’s giving someone was using it rather than trying to sell it.”
