The New Trailer For ‘The Odyssey’ Proves Robert Pattinson Wasn’t Kidding About The Daddy Thing
He's a suitor! He's bona fide.

As we draw nearer Christopher Nolan’s Greek Week, a.k.a. The Odyssey, new footage gives fans a peep at some of the characters, God and mortal alike, in the epic ensemble. It also gives us Robert Pattinson saying “daddy” …happy July, everyone.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Pattinson–as he is wont to do–got attention for saying something wild. “I always end up doing these slithery things with Tom [Holland] and I don’t know why,” he said, when asked about working with the Spider-Man: Brand New Day actor for the third time. “This was just a fun part to play: ‘I just whttps://www.themarysue.com/odyssey-tom-holland-robert-pattinson-filming-relationship/ant to be your daddy. I want to be your daddy. That’s all I want!’”
As it turns out, that dynamic is in the text more literally than we may have thought. This was not just Pattinson projecting, or (something he never does) making things up. The new trailer for Nolan’s The Odyssey includes a tension-heavy scene between Pattinson and Holland’s characters.
“You’re pining for a daddy you didn’t even know like some sniveling bastard,” the former sneers to the latter. (Oh! Jealous, much? Who said that?)
You can watch the new teaser, labeled the “Official Countdown Trailer,” here.
What does the latest trailer tell us about Christopher Nolan’s adaptation?

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about what else this trailer reveals. The footage is structured in a a way to underline what Odysseus (Matt Damon) has waiting for him at home–a wife (Anne Hathaway) who refuses to admit he’s dead, suitors (Pattinson and Corey Hawkins included) waiting to pounce on his house and title, and a grown-up son (Holland) preparing himself to take his place if it comes to that. This is a key part of Homer’s Odyssey. You might not remember it from the translation you read in English class. Things like the Cyclops, the lotus eaters, the sirens and Circe are more magical and action-packed. But it is absolutely there.
We also see, for the first time, Zendaya in action as the goddess Athena. She speaks to Odysseus and advises him. “You Gods don’t speak in ways we understand,” he says to Athena.
“Who doesn’t understand pain,” she responds, “or blood? The Gods told you.”
At the end of the small tale this trailer is telling, Odysseus is ready to defy the Gods. That is kind of his thing, to be fair. But using that line in the trailer sets up his emotional journey beyond just getting home.
There’s also some new footage of Lupita Nyong’o as either Helen or Clytemnestra–the Academy Award winner plays both characters, who are sisters, in the film. We see Elliot Page, who plays a solider related to Odysseus, and John Leguizamo as well. And yet there are so, so many characters and cast members and whimsical situations yet to be revealed. All of that stuff that I mentioned before? The things you totally do remember discussing in high school? That’s all being kept under wraps. We haven’t seen Bill Irwin as the Cyclops, Charlize Theron as Calypso, or Samantha Morton as Circe.
Finally, there’s an adorable puppy who showed up in a previous trailer and I refuse to dwell upon. Wasn’t Supergirl stressful enough?
