The Flash has seen renewed popularity as a superhero thanks to the success of the TV show adaptation and the launch of the DC Extended Universe, which will see the character reimagined in a separate portrayal by actor Ezra Miller. If you watched Batman V Superman you had the opportunity to spot Miller’s Flash in a brief cameo, and while he will be showing up again in the first Justice League movie he’ll also be getting his own solo film along with fellow Justice Leaguer, Aquaman.

Reports seemed to confirm so far that the Flash solo movie won’t be an origin story, and while Seth Grahame-Smith had originally been attached to direct in addition to writing the script, his decision to part from the project over creative differences meant that the movie was in need of a new director.

Enter Rick Famuyiwa, who recently directed the Sundance flick Dope as well as HBO’s successful drama Confirmation, which starred Kerry Washington and Wendell Pierce. While Famuyiwa’s past projects have mostly been made up of independent films, he’ll have some time before he has to step into the role of directing for the DCEU since the Flash film is scheduled to premiere on March 16, 2018.

Next to Black Panther‘s Ryan Coogler, Famuyiwa being tapped for this project means that both of the big superhero franchises will be releasing films helmed by black directors in the same year. That’s a pretty great sign of things to come in 2018.
