According to The Hollywood Reporter, an adaptation of the award-winning children’s book The Breadwinner is coming our way in 2017 from a team of female creators.

Based on a Deborah Ellis novel by the same name, the animated movie will tell the story of Parvana, a young girl living under the Taliban’s regime in Afghanistan who disguises herself as a boy in order to feed her family after her father is imprisoned.

In a statement, Jolie Pitt explained

Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict, and helping their families to survive in those conditions. This story is a reminder of the immense value of their contribution. I am delighted to be working with a talented team of artists who I know will do justice to the richness, creativity and strength of Afghan culture and to little girls like Parvana.

The Breadwinner will be directed by animator Nora Twomey from a script by Anita Doron, and released in both English and Dari.
