United States President Donald Trump and his Republican buddies have never shied away from taking God’s name.

He and his party have often used religion to achieve their goals and spread propaganda that benefits them while harming others. On October 6, Trump, during a press conference in the Oval Office, discussed his devotion to God and stated that one of the most important things for him was to be “good” in His eyes to be able to smoothly “go to that next step,” referring to heaven or the afterlife. His exact words on the matter were:

“You know, there’s no reason to be good. I wanna be good because you wanna prove to God you’re good so you go to that next step, right? So, that’s very important to me. I think it’s really, very important.”

Additionally, he also stated that a nation cannot truly be good if it does not believe in religion. However, more recently, Trump appears to have taken a step back from his religion-related comments. He seems no longer to believe that he could have a place in heaven, at least according to what he is saying now. While being interviewed by several journalists during a flight and asked about his previous “heaven” related comments, Trump expressed uncertainty, mentioning that he wasn’t sure if he was “heaven-bound.” He said:

“I don’t think there’s anything that’s going to get me into heaven. I think I’m not maybe heaven bound. I may be in heaven right now as we fly in Airforce 1.  I’m not sure I’m going to be able make heaven.”

Trump’s comments quickly circulated on social media and other platforms, where people criticised him for his conflicting statements over a short period. Some noted that he had become self-aware, while others corrected them, suggesting he would soon revert to his previous stance. One person wrote:

“The fact that his followers think they’re Christian is hilarious because THAT is the antichrist and y’all rock his merch like the mark of the beast.”

Trump’s comments about religion and God may be surprising but not shocking. He is known to go back on his word time and again, only to circle back to what benefits him.
