Texas man allegedly poses as Uber driver in attempt to pick up woman waiting for her friend: ‘Welcome to stardom’

He claimed he was trying to break the ice.

Women often have to be extra cautious when a stranger approaches, as situations can quickly become unsafe. That was the case for one woman when a “creepy” man allegedly walked up to her and impersonated an Uber driver in an attempt to pick her up at night.

Dianis (@diana_nluca) shared the encounter in a video on TikTok. According to Dianis, she was standing outside Mother’s Ruin, a bar located in Austin, Texas, when the incident happened. She claimed to have been waiting for her friend when a man approached and supposedly told her that he was her Uber driver.

“I’m your Uber driver. My car is right there,” the man allegedly told Dianis. But Dianis said she was “sober enough” to realize the man was lying. It remains unclear whether Dianis did actually order an Uber ride, or if she recognized the trick because she didn’t.

Man says he was trying to break the ice using Uber

In the video, Dianis recorded the man as she and her friends walked down the street in the same direction as him, and confronted him about his alleged lie. She added in her caption that they weren’t pursuing the man, but he just happened to be going in the same direction on their way home.

I was standing outside Mothers Ruin in ATX waiting for my friend when this creep came up and said “I’m your uber driver, my car is right there” little did he know that I was sober enough to know this was a ruse. Once my friend joined I decided to help him become FAMOUS. Women be careful of creepy men. Also don’t follow after them, he just happened to be walking on my way home.

“Hey, I thought you were my Uber,” Dianis told the man. However, he seemingly admitted to claiming he was an Uber driver when he responded, “I logged out. I’m fine.” Dianis then repeatedly asked the man where his car was.

“Why would you say that? Why would you say, ‘Hey, I’m your Uber driver,’ and then not be my Uber driver? Were you trying to…?” Dianis asked him. The man claimed he was trying to “break the ice” in response. However, Dianis wasn’t having it and called the man a “weirdo” for seemingly trying to pick up women while they were drunk.

Dianis told the man he was going to “be famous” as he gave the camera a flying kiss, and asked the TikToker, “How many followers do you have?” when he walked away from the women.

He’s now ‘famous‘ on TikTok

“This is going to go viral. Austin, Texas. Creepy men trying to pick up women, saying they’re [an] Uber driver, because [they’re] thinking you’re drunk,” Dianis said. “Welcome to stardom!”

The man appeared to have achieved a bit of stardom, as the video gained over 183,800 views. Many were left appalled by the man’s seemingly nonchalant behavior after getting called out, saying, “Him trying to insult you for not being kidnappable is crazy. Very common man behavior.”

Some claimed they’d had similar encounters with the same man, alleging this wasn’t an isolated incident. “Omg !!! He followed me home after my movie on 2nd street and it was so so scary !!!!” a viewer wrote. Another said, “He tried to do this to me around lucky duck but I’m loud so i started screaming cuss words – it worked. But this man is dangerous. I can’t believe how much he does this.”

Others urged Dianis to file a complaint, as not only did the man claim to be an Uber driver, but viewers alleged that she nearly got kidnapped. “so he attempted to lure woman into his car… so kidnapping intoxicated woman, file that police report,” a viewer said. However, such a claim cannot be independently verified.

As of writing, Dianis hasn’t given an update on whether she made a report. Meanwhile, Uber released the Women’s Preferences feature in an effort to provide women with an added layer of security when using its services.
