According to Glen Winter, the director of next week’s Supergirl, the upcoming episode centers on the Martian Manhunter, whose identity reveal a few weeks back threw a lot of people for a loop. It’s said to be an origin episode, going into his back story.

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Winter said:

It’s an amazing episode. It delves into Martian Manhunter’s history, and where he came from. Someone from his past comes back to see him. David Harewood gives an emotional, nuanced performance. You can expect to cry. It’s beautiful. [Audiences] can expect some amazing action.

I’m almost ashamed to admit this comes as a bit of a surprise to me, because the character of Hank Henshaw has always struck me as kind of a one-note deal. (I should note up front: I’m not familiar with a lot of the backstories that go into Supergirl, so…) He’s a bit of a flat hard ass–who has his moments for sure, but he’s definitely filling a TV Trope somewhere. I don’t think this is because of Harewood’s skill as an actor, but rather it’s because of the way his character is written.

Don’t get me wrong–I’d love to be proven wrong about all of this. I love it when a show can figure out a way to get me to feel so emotional that I cry. I’m down for that. I’m just not sure if they can pull it off. Either way, I’m still going to be watching because I’m really enjoying Supergirl, so there’s that.

How about you? Does this bit of news get you stoked about this upcoming episode?
