Supergirl star Milly Alcock talked about how existing as a woman in fandom spaces is tricky. And, the online trolls are not happy about it. The actress just shared her experience and the quotes have random nerds frothing at the mouth out there.

As the trailer for Supergirl charmed a ton of the folks out there, some of these men are upset that the actress would have the bravery to explain her experience. Vanity Fair asked Alcock about being part of Game of Thrones. And, they wanted to know if the experience helped prepare her for the “inevitable” backlash to her new role as Kara Zor-El. (Just so we’re clear, that framing is beyond nasty work!)

“It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,” Alcock told them. “We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”

Alcock played the younger version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon. Folks really liked her portrayal of the character. However, we all know that any online fandom is going to have its share of creeps and other nonsense associated with the job. Sadly, we haven’t managed to eradicate a lot of that goofiness from these different communities.

This actress knows what the deal is heading into any big project bearing her name. She’s talked about her efforts to really get back on the horse after House of the Dragon in interviews as well. It was a big step out onto Faith to play Supergirl as the biggest role since a massive franchise on HBO.

Despite that being the case, she is giving it a go anyway! And honestly, that’s showing a lot of bravery on its face. The Supergirl trailer being so good is probably going to help her cause in spite of whatever the Internet is going on about now.

People were quick to point out Brie Larson’s similar experience

Because it can never be one lady, people immediately thought about Brie Larson or Tatiana Maslany’s experiences in the MCU. Both Captain Marvel and She-Hulk are projects that draw a strong reaction online even now. Bad faith actors completely hijacked the discourse surrounding both heroes after release.

In essence, there’s really not a lot the individual actor can do. Changing these fandoms and the reaction to projects led by women is up to all of us. Yes, even those of us reading. As with so many other facets of modern life, we have to go about creating the world that we want to live in. There will be trials and tribulations across the spectrum of that experience. But, the future we desire is out there if we have the courage to go and grasp it. I immediately thought about some comments from Brie Larson in Variety back in 2019.

“I have genuinely never needed to look at the internet to explain to me who I am,” the Marvel actress argued. “I’m extremely committed to that in my day-to-day life! There is really nothing more pleasurable to me than observing my mind. And interrogating myself. It is a thing I’ve done since I was a child. And I will do for as long as I can.”
