Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Theme Park Has Us Fangirling Out

Summer 2019 can't come soon enough.

Ever since it was announced that Disney was building a Star Wars-themed addition to Disneyland we’ve been, to put it lightly, fangirling the hell out. Our excitement has only grown as more and more details emerge about the immersive new addition to the iconic theme park.

Now, with the park set to open this summer at Disneyland in Anaheim, California (and later this fall at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida), Disney has released a new featurette with behind the scenes footage of the park and its planned attractions. And reader, it looks pretty damn exciting.

The video gives us a glimpse of the building of the park, as well as John Williams’ new music composed especially for Galaxy’s Edge. Scott Trowbridge, creative executive of Disney Imagineering, says “I hope that when people come to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and they experience it for the first time, that this place they’re walking through and the characters they’re seeing and the beasts and aliens and droids puts them in a position where they give themselves over to the moment to the story and play with us in the world of Star Wars.”

The clip gives us a glimpse of the featured ride, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, which allows guests to sit in the cockpit and pilot the Falcon themselves. To use a dated reference, the ride seems like a Star Wars-themed version of Universal Studios’ beloved (and sadly defunct) Back to the Future ride.

We also get a closer look at Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, which Trowbridge calls “the most epic attraction we’ve ever built”. The ride recruits guests to the resistance, where they take on the First Oder and even encounter Kylo Ren. The ride is billed as the biggest, most immersive attraction ever for the parks.

Carrie Beck, the VP of Lucasfilm Story Group says, “It will be jaw-dropping and incredibly emotional to walk into the land for the first time, to actually be standing there amongst the buildings, amongst the ships, and have this feeling that it is all real, that it’s been brought to life, and it is right there in front of you. It’s overwhelming.”

There’s a lot to get psyched about in the video (they’re carving a Hondo head! Space pirates!) but I’m especially excited for the highly detailed sets and structures of Galaxy’s Edge. Can I buy property and live there? Asking for a friend.

Are you excited for the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge?
