Spoilers to Spy x Family episodes one and two
The first episode of Spy x Family introduced us to the mysterious spy, Twilight, as he embarked on a new mission that required him to get himself a family before the commercial break. At the end of the episode, he’s already emotionally attached to the anime child of the season, Anya—though he’d deny it if you asked.
Unfortunately, he also has to get himself a wife. The prestigious school he has to work his way into expects a picture-perfect two-parent household. The second episode solves this problem by introducing us to Yor Briar, who has secrets of her own. However, those secrets make her the perfect fit for Twilight and his growing “this is just for the mission, oh no, it appears I’ve caught feelings for you” family.
They arrest single women, you know.
By day, Yor is an employee at Berlint City Hall. By night? She’s the deadly assassin “Thorn Princess.” Because she’s trying to keep a solid cover, it’s in her best interest to appear as normal as possible. This means when her coworkers AND little brother express concerns about her single status, she decides that she should probably get herself, at the very least, a boyfriend. Besides, they arrest single women, you know, under the suspicion of being a spy—at least that’s what one of Yor’s coworkers tells her.
Cuz darling I would catch a grenade for you???
Twilight (posing as Loid Forger) and Yor meet by chance, and with a little nudging from Anya, they decide to test out the tried and true fanfiction trope of “fake dating.” Twilight needs someone to pose as Anya’s mother and his wife, and Yor needs someone to pose as her boyfriend at a party where her coworkers will be. This is extra important since her brother plans on asking one of her coworkers about her boyfriend.
Of course, neither knows the real reason why the other person needs a fake partner. Yor believes that Twilight is a single dad trying to get their kid into a good school, and Twilight thinks Yor needs a date for a party because the people in her life can’t seem to mind their own business. Things get jumbled when he mistakingly calls himself her husband instead of just her boyfriend while they’re at the party, but as the night goes on, the two realize that maybe they can skip the trial period and just go all-in immediately.
With all of the “this is only to serve my purposes” plot beats going on, you’d expect Twilight and Yor to take a while to have any sort of bond. However, these two clearly have chemistry and are perfect for each other. This ends on the most over-the-top proposal I’ve seen in anime in a while that involves the pin to a grenade and an explosive backdrop.
When Twilight and Yor’s evening is interrupted by a smuggling ring (Twilight had done a mission against them earlier that night), he takes the time to ask for her hand in marriage after the two fight them off. Yor doesn’t press Twilight all that much when he OBVIOUSLY has something going on beyond his therapist cover, and on the flip side, Twilight takes whatever flimsy excuse Yor has as to why she can kick a man hard enough to send him barrelling into the wall. While their quirks do mean that no one is gonna delve too deep into their lives, there’s also something nice about being around someone who takes you as is. Instead of thinking Yor is strange, Twilight is impressed by her skills, and the same goes for how she views Twilight.
So he proposes using the pin to a grenade as a ring. The grenade is tossed at their pursuers, and the two are set to become husband and wife – for the sake of each other’s covers, of course, it’s not like they’re gonna actually start falling in love or something. Ah, you truly do love to see fanfic tropes being perfectly executed for a pairing that you fell in love with as soon as their eyes met and a psychic little girl read their minds to push them in the right direction.
