Son Asks Mother to Buy Sushi With His Birthday Money. But She Charges Him for Gas and Buys Herself a Snack: ‘You Know, Consequences’
The public disagreed with her methods.
How parents raise their children is always a widely discussed topic, such as whether or not a kid should have access to screen time. But for one mother, her method of supposedly teaching her young son how to manage his finances was met with criticism when she charged him for gas and bought herself a snack using his birthday money instead.
TryingMyFkinBest (@tryingmyfkinbest) told viewers in a video shared on TikTok, which has since gained over 1.1 million views, that her son received money from his grandmother for his birthday. With the money, the son asked his mother to buy sushi for dinner. TryingMyFkinBest agreed, but with the caveat that he paid for her gas.
“I thought we were gonna have a bonding time and go get it together,” TryingMyFkinBest said. “He asked me if I could go get it. I told him he had to pay me gas money cause, you know, consequences.”
Mother says it’s to teach the value of money
It’s understandable to want compensation for gas, especially with prices skyrocketing due to international conflicts. However, expecting your young son to shoulder those costs can be difficult to justify to others.
TryingMyFkinBest said she got her son the New York Crunch Roll from Kroger and added an Onigiri Crab Salad for herself, along with spicy mayo and sushi eel sauces. “I spent $17 and 72 cents. $15 of that was from my son,” she said.
After sharing the video, TryingMyFkinBest received backlash from TikTok viewers, who called her the “worst” and described her parenting style as “awful.” In response, TryingMyFkinBest claimed that the “value of a dollar is being learned.” She added, “Yes, even with birthday money. Even near his birthday. Because Im blessed to raise him and understand him. Hoping to make him someone’s husband that they don’t have to raise.”
TryingMyFkinBest also asked viewers at what point in life they teach their own children to go into a store and pay for the item they want with their own money. Still, viewers were seemingly not sold on the mother’s reasoning.
Her parenting style raises eyebrows
“Charging him for gas isn’t teaching him the value of money, also parents are supposed to be a safety net for kids when they are young so they can make mistakes. I feel so bad for that boy,” one viewer wrote. Another added, “Being bullied by your mom over your birthday money isn’t a life lesson. that’s something a sibling would do not an emotionally mature parent.”
Some were also curious as to why TryingMyFkinBest’s son had to face consequences, saying, “i’ll ask again. what action caused the consequences?” Others defended the TikToker and claimed that learning such a lesson had helped them with their finances: “yall don’t understand the value of paying for your own s*** as a child. my parents did the exact same s*** and im great with money now. i know exactly how much i need to spend to get what i need AND how much i need to eat before im just wasting.”
Educating children about finances at a young age is generally encouraged as it fosters life skills, but the manner in which it’s done may also play a role in how kids perceive these lessons. Either way, it doesn’t seem like TryingMyFkinBest will change how she parents her child despite others’ strong opinions.
